Arthur Conan Doyle: The Hound of the Baskervilles. Summary

Hound of the Baskervilles
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" (in the original English version - The Hound of the Baskervilles) is a story by Arthur Conan Doyle describing the adventures of the most famous detective of all time and his assistant. The first publication of the work is dated August 1901. She appeared in parts in the monthly Strand Magazine. The Hound of the Baskervilles is noteworthy for yet another point. It became a kind of revival of the character beloved by readers after his possible death in a fight with the leader of the underworld of London, Professor Moriarty. Fans of the work of Conan Doyle praised the “Hound of the Baskervilles”: the book ensured success in subsequent stories about the detective from Baker Street.

According to the plot, Sherlock Holmes will investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. James Mortimer, a doctor in a branch of Devonshire County, comes to Baker Street 221-B. He is concerned about the sudden death of one of his patients. The body of Sir Charles Baskerville was discovered in the park of his own estate. Despite the fact that everything spoke of a natural death caused by a progressive heart disease, the doctors were wary of something, namely the giant dog footprints near the lifeless body. The deceased himself was deeply convinced that there was a Hound of the Baskervilles - a creature of mystical origin that had been haunting his family for several centuries. Farmers from nearby lands shared the opinion of Sir Charles, according to which, they themselves had more than once seen a dog burning in hellish light at night in the swamps.

Intrigued by the riddle, Holmes takes control of the case. The very next day he meets with the offspring of the deceased, Sir Henry. The new owner of the enchanted estate is in the platoon: he received an anonymous letter with threats and advice to stay away from the family nest. On a nervous basis, Henry begins to drink hard and deeply believe in family tradition. Sherlock discovers in London secret surveillance of a young baronet.

Contrary to his custom, the detective refuses to personally visit the scene of the murder and delegates all powers to Dr. Watson, who is entrusted with the task of accompanying Sir Henry everywhere and reporting on the situation regarding the letters.

During the investigation, it is possible to establish that the Hound of the Baskervilles is nothing more than a hoax by the authorship of Jack Stapleton's neighbor, who is actually the nephew of the late baronet. Stapleton, having settled nearby under an assumed name, managed to rub his confidence in the Baskervilles in order to take possession of the estate. At one time, having learned from the lips of the most deceased a family legend and recalling the weak heart of Sir Charles, Jack turns his cunning plan into life. Having bought a huge black dog, Stapleton smears it with a special luminous composition and secretly delivers the dog at night to Baskerville Hall.

The cause of death of the poor baronet was also established. Stapleton’s calculation turned out to be correct: when he saw a “hellish creature” in front of him, Charles Baskerville set off to run, but because of great fear and stress, the elderly gentleman’s heart could not stand it. The same evil genius was trying to crank out against Henry, but Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes prevented the implementation of the insidious plan . The Baskervilles dog turned out to be an unusually large specimen of a cross between a bloodhound and a black mastiff, abundantly rubbed with phosphorus. Trying to hide from the police chase, Stapleton drowns in the Devonshire swamps. Holmes tries to save the life of the criminal, but does not have time.
