How to compress a file

Perhaps every Internet user at least once faced with the need to send a file, the weight of which significantly exceeds the size allowed when sending. And so, in any case, everyone had a need to send several files at once. The task is doubly complicated if they are large.

In fact, there is nothing complicated. Just know how to compress the file. First of all, find out what is meant by this.

File compression is the process of reducing repeated characters or optimizing a sequence of bytes, resulting in smaller source documents. Such a process is called archiving, or creating an archive.

In order to achieve this effect, you will need to acquire special programs. For example, to create a ZIP file, just install any version on a Windows computer. The archiver program in it is built-in. Also, to open (and compress) files of the RAR type, the Winrar program is suitable. And, despite the fact that the principle of their work is similar, the latter is more popular. We will study it in more detail.

So, before you compress a file of any kind and format, download Winrar on the Internet. Existing for a long time on the market, it has no analogues, and, best of all, is shareware. The functionality of this program and the list of supported formats are constantly replenished, which cannot but please a simple user. And the existence of the so-called "free trial period" (which smoothly flows into the period of constant use) doubles this joy. When the program is downloaded and installed, select the file or list of those that we want to archive. After we right-click on it and in the context menu we see that Winrar added some of its functions to it. Among them:

  • add to archive;
  • add to the archive <object name>;
  • add to archive and send by e-mail;
  • add <object name> to the archive and send by e-mail.

The first and third paragraph means the ability to both compress the file in a single copy, and add a few more to the archive. In this case, you can manage the process, that is, select the document name, degree and format of compression, as well as perform some actions with the source material. In the second and fourth paragraphs - to compress a specific file of your choice, no manipulations are supposed on your part, the program will do everything in the background.

Let's look at an example in more detail how to compress a PDF file. Since this format is intended primarily for placing printing products, that is, magazines, books and other things in their original form, with all the pictures, its "weight" is often quite large, so it is reduced by archiving or compression. The process does not damage the quality, that is, all the pictures, and the text itself, will not change after compression. After the file is processed and sent to the addressee (if this was the final goal), it should be unpacked by the same program. That is, the addressee must also have Winrar installed. After unpacking the document, you can easily make sure that there was no loss in quality.

Before you compress the file, keep in mind: you need to sacrifice something. Namely: if you want to maintain the previous quality, you will achieve compression of only a few megabytes, depending on the size of the source. That is, a file weighing 20 mb can be compressed to 17-18 without changes in quality. If the quality level of the file during its subsequent extraction from the archive is not important, it will be possible to use the "maximum compression" function. The file will become much smaller than the source, but the quality, which is logical, will suffer.

Often the site offers to compress files (including PDF) online and absolutely free, but it is much more convenient to have the appropriate program at hand.
