History of occurrence
High-quality hunting weapons have always been in high demand in Russia. Technical innovations and improvements in the military industry have stimulated the development of professional weapons for commercial professional hunting.
But at the beginning of the twentieth century, hunters were forced to use outdated specimens, these guns did not fully meet their objectives, did not fit the dimensions and other characteristics for a high-quality hunting.
For example, the Berdan rifle possessed the necessary reserve of cartridge power, which could crush a large animal found among Russian forests. The used bullet, 4.2-linear, met the required parameters.
But the rifle, being a single-shot, was awkward, too heavy and exceeded the comfortable length. It was not possible to shoot accurately and efficiently from it, and this is important in hunting conditions. Mosin’s three-line weapon , or rather a rifle, which was highly appreciated at that time, was fast-firing, but also not suitable for regular and professional use for fishing purposes.
These rifles tried to remake, change their structure and modification, but the results did not suit the engineers. Immediately, the cost began to rise, and production turned out to be unprofitable. There was an attempt to develop a carbine and promote it to the masses with V. Markevich. He was a good specialist in the field of weapons. Markevich took the Mosin rifle as the basis and used the cartridge 7.62, but his proposal was unsuccessful, and such a small-arms, variational weapon was not used.
Much later, in the late sixties, Blum M.N. introduced a carbine, the model of which was called B-9. This weapon was supposed to shoot with special bullets, with a caliber of 9.3x64. Bullets were also developed by Blum. The carbine hit with its power, but also could not get on the conveyor.
Prototype
The true predecessor of the Elk carbine was the NK-8.2 - a carbine that was developed on the basis of the Mosin gun. NK-8.2 became the owner of a waferless cartridge. An obstacle to the spread was the low speed of the bullet, but its design served as a prototype for the future hunting professional weapons.
Izhmash began to produce NK-8.2 in 1965. This modification was for a cartridge with an increased velocity of bullets. The carbine was designed for a caliber of 9.3x66 millimeters, and then was redone under the more severe and powerful cartridge created by Blum.
