Click-to-Run - what is it? This is Microsoft's streaming and virtualization technology, which reduces the time required to install Office and allows you to run multiple versions on the same personal computer. Allows you to download and use all Office applications until they are fully installed.
Click-to-Run - what is it? Definition and description of the work process
Click-to-Run uses Microsoft virtualization and streaming technology. It is an alternative to the classic Windows Installer (MSI) -based installation and upgrade method. If you install Office using MSI, you need to wait until the entire product is installed before you start working with it. But with Click-to-Run streaming capabilities, you can open and start applying the product before the full installation is complete. While you are using the product, the rest of the software is downloaded in the background. If you try to use a function that has not yet been downloaded and installed, Click-to-Run will download and install it immediately.
Functionality
Click-to-Run functionality - what is it? This is a feature that allows you to quickly install Microsoft products, including Office 2010, 2013, and 365.
Click-to-Run mode uses built-in App-V 5 technology to run Office in an isolated environment. This feature allows you to run multiple versions on the same computer. Because App-V 5 technology is built into Click-to-Run, it does not require licensing and installing a full client.
Technological process
Click-to-Run Technology - what is it? Office Click-to-Run products use streaming technology that is similar to watching videos on the Internet. You can watch the first part of the video before downloading the entire file. Similarly, you can start using Office 2010 before the entire package or product is downloaded.
Is it possible to remove Microsoft Click-to-Run?
Since Click-to-Run provides an update to the Office suite and is an important component of the operating system, it is not recommended to remove it, but its functionality can be disabled. To do this, follow these steps:
Click "Start" and open the "Control Panel".
Select "Administration" and go to "Services" (as an alternative, enter services.msc without quotation marks in the search field in the "Start" menu).
In the Services window, find the Microsoft Office Click To Run service, right-click it, select Properties.
On the General tab, find “Launch Type” and select “Disable”. Click “OK” and restart the computer.
The above steps are for Windows 7, 8, and 10.
Advantages of the software product
Benefits of Click-to-Run Office 2010:
Speed - you can start using your Microsoft Office 90 seconds after launch. For comparison: during this period of time, the MSI file can only download 10% of the software product.
Timely update download - click the "Run Installation" button to activate the latest fixes and updates online. This does not interfere with the user's main work. Upgrading via MSI to a stand-alone copy of Microsoft Office installed on a computer requires one hour to 90 minutes.
The memory of the function “Launch installed applications” takes up two times less memory in comparison with MSI.
Programs installed using Click To Run technology are fully recoverable compared to MSI releases.
Replacing Click-to-Run with MSI
To switch from Click-to-Run Office to MSI Edition, you must uninstall the Run Office version and replace it with the MSI version. Algorithm:
Open "Programs and Features" in the control panel.
Click Microsoft Office to start the OS.
Activate the “Delete” button.
Confirm the deletion request.
Go to the Microsoft Office Alternate Launch page to activate the MSI installer.
Go to the "My Account" section.
Select Download.
Click Advanced Options.
Follow the instructions on the screen to start the installation of MSI.
Install the MSI-based version of Microsoft Office by running SingleImage.exe.
When prompted, enter the product key.
Windows now checks for updates for Office and installs them over time. You can use the same method to switch from MSI to Click-to-Run.
Please note that both of these types cannot be used simultaneously.
