Working with text editors is a common thing for many of us. All vacancies related to working on the Internet require the ability to freely edit text in Word and other similar programs. Schools and universities have long stopped writing essays and reports by hand. Now for this you can use a text editor.
About Microsoft Word
The program is known to many and is part of the Windows operating system. Previously often met as a preinstalled editor, now it has to be installed independently.
For installation, you can use the whole package from Microsoft, which includes other programs, or download only Word. Online versions are also becoming popular now. One of them is available in Google Disk. This is practically a copy of the Word.
Program features
Editing text in Word is a multi-operational process. In addition to simple input and replacement of characters, the program supports working with tables, pictures, etc. Can change the size, style and font color.
The program also has a function for replacing text, or as it is also called auto-correction. There is also a spell check, saving the document in a specific format and much more.
Getting started with a document
So, before you start editing text in Word, you need to understand what exactly you will work on. Perhaps you already have a ready-made text that needs to be adjusted, or maybe you want to create a new one, and then edit it.
If you are going to open a file for editing, you need to find it and right-click on it. Sometimes the system assigns another program as the main text editor, therefore it is necessary to open files through the document properties. In the list we find the line "Open with ...". Then it remains to choose from the proposed Microsoft Word.
You can open the document directly in the program. To do this, run it and go to the “File” tab, look for the “Open” line, and then find the text we need.
If you want to convert “PDF” to “Word” for text editing, you will have to use a third-party program or an online converter. But you should be prepared for the fact that the text may not be displayed completely or incorrectly, so it will need to be edited and formatted.
If you are going to start work from scratch, just run the program, and you will have an empty space, where you need to enter information.
Program tools
To edit documents in Word, you may need a fairly extensive toolkit, although it all depends on your requirements. All the necessary options can be found in the tabs above.
For example, in the “Home” tab, you can choose the font style and size, adjust the style and orientation in the text. You can immediately activate bulleted lists and line spacing and indentation.
In general, everything is clear in this tab, and it is it that is most often needed for formatting.
An equally important tab is Insert. Thanks to it, you can embed an image, clip, shapes or tables into the text. All this helps to format the text and make it more diverse.
Formatting
Formatting of documents in text editors follows similar algorithms, so if you have done this at least once in one of the programs, you can repeat the feat in all the others.
How does formatting work? Suppose you wrote a text that now looks like a solid canvas of words. If you have a title, you can select it and select styles in the "Home" tab. Here headers of different levels are presented, it all depends on how you want to format the text.
If you have one heading, then you can use any of them, if the text assumes a large number of headings and subheadings, then you will have to choose styles of different levels to make them stand out in the document.
If the text has an important quote or some special phrase, it can be emphasized in italics or bold. To do this, again, you need to select this piece of text and select the appropriate option in the "Home" tab.
In general, almost all tools work on this principle. To increase the size, select the text and select the desired value. To change the style, just select the text and select from the drop-down list.
Work with table
Things are more complicated with formatting and editing tables. The fact is that the program itself involves creating a table, but also involves importing them from Excel. This is another package program from Microsoft, which is a table editor.
If you want to understand how to edit the text in the table in Word, then you need to go to the Insert tab and select the appropriate option. Here you can select the number of columns and rows. If necessary, they can be added to the finished table.
Inside the cells you can write text. It is also formatted as if there were no borders. The only thing that it may not fit into the framework, so they will have to be expanded. Also, users often encounter column or row offsets. In part, they can "jump" from page to page, and break.
Therefore, many are advised to nevertheless draw a table and format it in Excel, and then simply import it into the Word document.
Editing and Spelling
This section will be useful for those who are not friends with the Russian language. As already mentioned, editing text in Word can be done using various tools. For example, many use the Spelling feature. It is on the tab at the top, and you can also call it by clicking on F7.
A window will appear in which all current errors will be displayed, and replacement options will be provided nearby. However, it is worthwhile to understand that this does not always work correctly. For example, things with some surnames and neologisms are bad. The program will provide you with any kind of strange options for replacement, or even indicate that there are no options.
Automatic editing of text in Word does not work correctly. There is an option “Find and Replace”. In this case, you can find a specific word in the text that may have been originally spelled incorrectly, and then copied many times, and replace it with the correct version. The same story is with characters that should have a certain look.
Top Text Editors
Of course, Microsoft Word is not the only program that works with text. In addition, text editors can be used to work with a programming language. Therefore, there may be many options, but here you have to look for the best applications:
- Google Docs
- Libre Office
- Sublime Text
- WPS Office
- NotePad ++.
These are some of the best options to help deal with text in any format.
Google docs
As already mentioned, this is the most approximate and similar to the "Word" editor. Its peculiarity is that it can be used for free, without downloading and installing. You just need to get Google Disk and work in the browser. As you understand, this editor is dependent on the Internet connection.
Nevertheless, it works stably. It has all the tools for editing and formatting. By the way, spelling here works many times better. You can save text in a standard format, as well as in PDF, TXT, HTML, etc.
Libre office
Another clone of the Vord. The editor is included in a free package with other programs. You can install it separately. The interface is very similar to Microsoft Word. Therefore, working with it is also simple and straightforward. There are all the necessary tools for editing and formatting.
Sublime text
And this is one of the best programs for programmers. In it you can do the usual text editing, and even use plugins in the Python programming language.
In fact, the editor copes well with other languages, so it is popular among programmers. It is unlikely that someone will install this option in order to use it in working with a regular test. In 2018, version 3.1 was released, a lot has changed since the application was developed, so it is recommended to install just one of the latest versions.
WPS Office
Another alternative to Word. This program is different in that it can be installed on a smartphone for free, and working with it is very simple. She has a Russian interface. The disadvantages of this software package are the presence of paid features. That is, you can install the editor for free, but during editing or formatting, some options will be available only for money.
NotePad ++
This is a free text editor. It has source code for working on Windows. Also supports a large number of programming languages. Uses syntax highlighting.
