This article describes a program for adjusting the speed of a processor cooler, video card, and other elements of a PC. It doesn't matter if you need to change the fan speed due to their excessive noise or due to overheating, SpeedFan will help in any case. The main condition for the correct functioning of the utility is the ability to adjust coolers from the BIOS.
Speedfan
SpeedFan is an absolutely free program for adjusting the speed of a cooler for a video card, central processor and any other equipment with active cooling. The fan can be controlled automatically or manually.
Before starting the utility, it is advisable to disable the automatic change of speed in the BIOS. If you ignore this condition, the correct functioning of the application is not guaranteed. After switching on, SpeedFan reads fan speed information and takes these values as maximum. It follows that if the BIOS settings do not allow to spin the cooler to the limit, then the utility will not be able to do this.
For example, the CPU cooler turned on at a speed of 1000 rpm while turning on SpeedFan. The application will take this value as the upper limit and will not be able to increase the frequency when the processor temperature reaches a critical level. If the computer does not automatically turn off, then its central processor will fail.
First start
After starting, the program for adjusting the cooler speed will draw a brief help window. After studying the text, check the box next to a single item and close the window. After that, it will no longer appear on the screen.
Now the program will determine on which equipment active cooling is installed with the ability to adjust and read the sensor readings. After that, the display will automatically display a list of fan speeds and the temperature of the main elements of the PC. In addition, in the application panel, you can observe information about the processor load and voltage.
To switch the language to Russian, go to "Configure"> "Options". Switch "Language" set to "Russian". Click on "OK."
Main window
The program for adjusting the speed of coolers in Russian displays all the information necessary for the user in separate blocks. In the middle of the window are data describing all the found fan controllers. Their names are Fan2, Fan1 , etc. At the same time, the list can include a lot more coolers than there are in the PC. On the contrary, some of them will display the actual fan speed. Others will either show zero values or garbage (less than 1000 rpm).
Opposite the data describing the operation of the screws, there is a block of information about the temperature of the main components of the PC:
There may also be trash. To determine which values are not real, you need to think logically. For example, the temperature of devices in a running machine is unlikely to reach 5 or 120 degrees.
This is the only drawback that the program for adjusting the speed of rotation of the cooler has not lost for all the years of development. It is worth saying that the official website offers a collection of necessary utility settings for popular PC configurations. However, it is often much faster to complete all the settings manually.
Main utility blocks
The utility block with the list Speed01, 02, etc. contains the screw speed switches. It is indicated as a percentage. The main task is to determine which switches from this unit are responsible for which fans.
Go to the first selector and change its value to 20-30%. Observe the speed opposite which line "Fan" is changing. Now change the settings of the next switch. Remember or write down each match found.
If the sensors cannot be identified, it makes sense to use the AIDA64 utility. Launch her and SpeedFan at the same time. Change the values of the Speed switches, and in AIDA see which specific fans start spinning at a different speed.
Configuration
Go to the “Configuration” menu. Here you can set all the lines of the main window blocks to understandable names. For example, rename the CPU cooler rotation sensor to "TempCPU". To do this, click on any item in the settings, wait a second and click again. After that, the line is highlighted and the cursor appears in it.
Highlight the name of the required sensor and pay attention to the bottom of the application window. This should include what temperature of each PC device the program for adjusting the cooler speed will consider normal. When the equipment cools to this level, the fan speed will be minimal. The temperature of the alarm should also be indicated. Heating to this level will turn on the maximum speed of the cooler.
To find out what values to use, refer to the official websites of the device manufacturers of your PC.
Now click on the “+” next to the sensor name. Uncheck all the boxes from the "Speed" list. Leave only one that matches the controller of this unit.
Go to the “Fans” tab and, if necessary, rename them in the same way as the sensors. Disable unused by unchecking the boxes.
Speed
For the program for automatic control of cooler speed to perform automatic control, open the "Speeds" tab. Select the line of the desired fan and rename it as you see fit. Now pay attention to the bottom block of the window. There are two points here:
All values are indicated in percent. Never enter a number equal to 100 here, because the fan will spin up completely when it reaches the peak temperature that was previously set.
At the end of the configuration, check the box next to "Auto Change" and click on "OK."
Extra options
In addition to the settings listed above, the program for adjusting the cooler speed has additional parameters. All of them are in the menu "Configuration"> "Options". It is impossible to describe them all in a small article, only the most necessary will be given here.
A checkmark in front of the text “Start minimized” will cause the program to turn on without displaying the main window. This is very convenient if the utility loads automatically with the operating system. Without setting a flag, every time after starting the OS, a utility window will appear on the display.
The checkbox next to "Minimize on closing" will allow the application to continue to work, even if the user clicked on the cross.
The checkbox "Full speed of fans after exiting" is necessary to prevent problems after closing the application. If it is not checked, the program for adjusting the speed of the laptop cooler will leave the rotational speed of the screws at the level at which they worked at the time the utility was completed.
