Windows Mail Client and Third-Party Applications: The Basics of Proper Configuration

Today it is difficult to imagine at least one user of a computer or mobile system without having a registered electronic mail box. An email address or e-mail address is now required almost everywhere (registration in services, on sites, in social networks, creation and restoration of accounts on computers and mobile devices, etc.).

E-mail has long ceased to be just a tool for correspondence (sending and receiving correspondence). Many email clients offer users some advanced features related to activating RSS feeds, using built-in browsers, or even HTML or JavaScript-based development tools. Further it is proposed to consider not only the basic settings of any email program, but also pay attention to the choice of applications for working with e-mails.

Choosing an Email Client from Windows Tools

And the very first question when considering the main topic will be the choice of the preferred program that will be used to access the registered email account. Among all that is offered today by the market for such software, you can choose either your own tools of the Windows operating systems (the Mail application, the Windows Live Mail mail client, Outlook Express and the Outlook program that was previously part of some office suite releases), either specialized clients combining the capabilities of instant messengers developed by the owners of mail services on the Internet (Mail.Ru Agent), or universal mail programs designed for any type of electronic mailboxes and types of operations systems.

It’s worth paying attention that if the address of the created mailbox used to be tied to the service of the provider that provides Internet access services, now you can configure any address - it doesn’t matter which service it was created and registered with.

General principles for setting up a mail client (any) using the Mail application in Windows 10 as an example

In the tenth modification of the system, if we talk about its own means, the default application for access to any electronic mailbox is the Mail application. Although the Outlook program can be found among the Office applications, the mail clients for Windows 10 in the form of Outlook Express or a similar Windows Live Mail client can be installed separately. As you can already understand, the developers of the tenth modification refused to use Outlook Express as the default program, generally excluding it from the pre-installed components of the operating system.

Now directly about the settings. The parameters of any email client in Windows systems require the correct setting of the addresses of the incoming and outgoing message servers, as well as the ports involved. As a rule, ports are activated automatically. If for some reason they will be unavailable, you will have to open them yourself (this will be discussed separately).

So, for incoming correspondence, POP3, HTTP and IMAP servers are used. In the standard version, a POP3 or IMAP server is usually installed. The outgoing server is always SMTP.

But let's take a step-by-step look at setting up the mail client for Windows tenth version installed in the system by default.

Select Mailbox Type

After starting the program, the user is prompted to add a registration record. And then select your preferred connection option from the list.

Entering email credentials

After that, simply enter your existing email address and wait for your inbox to enter. In some countries, Russian services may be blocked, and the system will issue a notification about the impossibility of connecting.

Enabling VPN Client

In this case, it is advisable to install the IP change programs (VPN clients like SafeIP) and try to login again when the applications are running.

Port settings

The installed ports for IMAP are 993 and 465. In the case of POP3, they are 110 and 25.

Port settings

As already mentioned, when choosing a server type, ports are activated automatically. If for some reason the connection is not possible, try to open (forward) the ports on the router (router). If you have a cable connection, go into the advanced settings of the firewall and create a new rule for the TCP port, following the instructions of the corresponding “Wizard”.

Third Party Software

As for other applications, among them the most famous and powerful are email clients like The Bat !, Mozilla Thunderbird, eM Client, Opera Mail and others.

Actually, the settings in them are not much different from what was described for the standard Windows client, but there are much more opportunities that the developers have laid in them. Especially users may be pleased with the ability to add several mailboxes, which can relate to completely different mail services.

What to do if mail does not work?

Finally, a few words about possible problems. Usually it can be impossible to enter a registered mailbox only because of an incorrect address, login or password. They are immediately worth checking out.

Part of the problem, as mentioned above, may be related to the blocking of mail services at the level of the provider or even the state. Problems with ports usually do not arise, but in the event of such a situation, they are solved quite simply by manual opening. If none of this helps, log in to your mail through a browser. It is possible that technical work is underway on the service’s website, and upon completion, the mail will again become available.

Instead of a total

That, in fact, is all about setting up any email client, be it a “native” Windows program or an application of another developer. In the parameters, the most important point can be called the correct choice of server types, since this option is dominant in the setting. The rest, in theory, should not be a problem.
