Powerful turbocharged engines of the YaMZ-238 brand are designed for MAZ-54322 and MAZ-64227 cars. The demand and popularity of such diesel power units is explained by their high reliability and good technical characteristics. These engines have eight cylinders. They have an increased work resource, compared with competitors, by 15 percent. The engine starts without problems in almost any, even in the most frosty weather.
Motor design
The cylinder blocks of the YaMZ-238 diesel engine are made of gray cast iron. Cylinder liners are also made of special carbide material. Two heads are installed on the power unit (one in each row of cylinders). Also, inside the motor housing, designers placed a forged crankshaft together with counterweights and bearings. All eight engine pistons are made of aluminum alloy. Each of them wears three compression rings and two oil scraper rings. Locking rings are necessary to limit the movement of floating piston fingers. Also in the cylinder block are forged steel connecting rods with an oblique connector on the lower head. To start the engine, a starter is used, in the housing of which there is a flywheel with a ring gear.
Clutch
The gear shift mechanism consists of four stamped pull levers mounted on needle bearings. Between the levers, the relative ratio is 1 to 5.4. Also in the design there are 28 pressure springs in the form of cylinders. They are made of steel wire. The cast iron middle drive disc is connected to the flywheel by large spikes that are located on the surface of the part.
Engine lubrication system
The diesel engine lubrication system of the Yaroslavl plant operates in a mixed mode. Its main element is an oil cooler, which is installed next to the engine housing. This system also includes two filter elements:
- Full-flow oil filter with replaceable filter element.
- The filter of thin purification of oil working due to centrifugal force. It is equipped with a jet drive.
At the same time, the manufacturer allows the installation of a coarse filter instead of a full-flow one. Under high pressure, the lubricant enters:
- connecting rod and main bearings of the crankshaft;
- camshaft bearings;
- bushings of the upper heads of the connecting rods;
- pusher sleeves;
- boom supports;
- oil pump bushing;
- valve rocker sleeve.
Lubrication for the fuel pump and speed controller comes from the engine lubrication system. Gears, camshafts, and rolling bearings are lubricated by spraying the lubricant. In this case, the following pressure is created in the oil system during engine operation:
- At rated speeds - from 400 to 700 kPA.
- At rated speed during idling - not less than 100 kPa.
Elements of the cooling system
The cooling system in YaMZ-238 (photo attached in the article) is liquid, circulating. It includes a number of basic elements, such as:
- pump for pumping liquid;
- heat exchanger;
- several thermostats that control the flow of cooling to the cylinders;
- a fan that provides air to the cabin and to the engine.
The YaMZ-238 turbo engine has a cooling system (the photo of the power unit is in the article) consists of the following components:
- A pump designed for continuous water circulation.
- The cavity where the cartridge cooling unit is located.
- Water cavity in the head of the block.
- Channel for the passage of water.
- Compressor.
- Right cooling tube.
- Connecting tube.
- Inlet pipe.
- Thermostat.
- Tee with tubes.
- Overflow pipe.
- Stub.
- Branch pipe of the oil heat exchanger.
- Fan.
- Water channel located transversely.
- The fluid supply, which serves to cool the engine, from the radiator to the stove in the cab, to the air exhaust system, to the radiator.
- Inflatable air supply system to the cooler and radiator.
- System for moving cooling air from the cooler to the engine cylinders.
In addition to the above, the cooling system of the YaMZ-238 unit consists of a radiator, a charge air cooler, and a thermometer. All this equipment is installed on a car.
Cooling principle
During normal operation of the YaMZ-238 motor from MAZ in the cooling system, fluid circulation is created due to the operation of a centrifugal pump. The pump pumps the coolant into the transverse channel, and then it passes through the longitudinal channel and enters the water cavity of the cylinders located in the right row. Coolant enters the remaining engine cylinders through the inlet pipe. Thus, it is possible to cool the oil at once in two elements of the power unit.
Next, the antifreeze enters the left longitudinally located channel. To coolant got into the liquid-oil heat exchanger, engineers pressed the plug into the front gear cover for distribution. Then the antifreeze through the tubes enters the cylinder heads, cooling the most heated surface, such as exhaust channels, nozzle glasses. Then the liquid is drained into several drainage pipes. During warming up of a newly started engine, the cooling system does not function.
The movement of antifreeze is prevented by thermostat valves. The liquid used to cool the engine from overheating is circulated through connecting pipes, a bypass pipe through a water pump. However, it does not get into the radiator, so the power unit is heated to operating temperature. After antifreeze heats up to 80 degrees Celsius, thermostat valves open. The liquid heated to the desired temperature enters the cavity of the water radiator, where it heats the flow of air supplied by the fan. Then the antifreeze comes back to the water pump.
At a time when the temperature of the coolant decreases, the thermostats direct it to the pump, bypassing the radiator. Thus, thanks to the thermostat locks in the engine, optimal thermal conditions are ensured.
Water pump
In the KAMAZ cooling system with YaMZ-238, a water pump (also called a pump) is placed on the front wall of the cylinder block. It rotates due to the pulley belt, which is mounted on the end of the crankshaft. The pump in the YaMZ-238 cooling system for MAZ-54322 and MAZ-64227 vehicles consists of the following parts:
- drive pulley;
- retaining ring;
- several bearings;
- roller;
- water dropper;
- mechanical seals;
- pump body;
- sealing rings;
- a nozzle attached to the water pump;
- impeller;
- impeller cap;
- the sleeve to the sealing ring;
- drainage hole.
The principle of the pump
The cooling system in the YaMZ-238 turbo works due to its main element - the pump (water pump). Inside its case, made of cast iron, the impeller rotates, which is pressed onto the roller. This creates an air stream.
To ensure rotation of the roller in the YaMZ-238 cooling system, it is mounted on two ball bearings. The bearing cavities are tightly clogged with lubricant (lithol), which is designed for the entire life of the pump. Replacement of this material is not required.
To ensure a tight mechanical seal in the pump casing, a drainage hole was made. The drive pulley is pressed onto the roller.
Each water pump, due to which the cooling system in YaMZ-238 works, is marked with a digital and letter designation.
Water pump function
The main task of the water pump in the cooling system in the YaMZ-238 is to ensure the circulation of the cooling liquid. It should also maintain a certain speed of antifreeze movement. A started engine should “give” a certain amount of heat to the cooling system. Then, in the fins of the radiator, the heated liquid is cooled.
A heavy load on an unheated engine is just as dangerous as overheating of the power mechanism.
Choosing a pump for the engine
For the operation of the oil cooling system, various water pumps are installed in the YaMZ-238, however, the most reliable product was the YaMZ-236/238 marking. Its parameters are ideally suited for powerful power units with the same alphanumeric index.
Such a pump is able to distill the liquid through the cooling system at a speed of about 30 liters per minute with a shaft torque of 0.52 units. The weight of such a product does not exceed 9 kg. The dimensions of the pump may vary depending on the type and power of the engine for which it is intended.
In addition to the dimensions, the pumps for the normal operation of the oil cooling system in the YaMZ-238 may differ in connecting dimensions.
The system uses antifreeze or antifreeze as a coolant. This means that the pump must operate at an ambient temperature of -40 to +50 degrees Celsius and withstand the same coolant temperature that it drives through the system. Also, the pump in the YaMZ-238 cooling system, with a volume of 11,150 cubic centimeters, should work properly if water is poured into it, which heats up to 100 degrees Celsius while moving through the pipes through the radiator and engine block.
Cooling System Check
During periodic inspections of the car, mechanics need to pay special attention to the condition of the YaMZ-238 cooling system with a volume of 11,150 cubic centimeters. It is necessary to check the tightness of the nozzles and joints in order to prevent the leakage of antifreeze in time.
To check the engine cooling pump for leaks, it is necessary to increase the pressure in the power unit to 3 kgf / cm 2 and maintain it for one minute. You can also check the pump for leaks by passing compressed air through the system for 30 seconds.
If the system is tight, the specialist must check the operation of the mechanisms. To do this, rotate the pump shaft. It should spin freely along its axis.
Dismantling the water pump
Many mechanics are interested in what possible malfunctions in the YaMZ-238 cooling system can arise during the operation of a car? Most often, the reason for the violation of heat transfer of the motor and antifreeze is a breakdown of the pump, which distills the coolant. In the event of a malfunction of such a part, it is necessary to find the cause of the breakdown by disassembling it. Then you need to decide on the feasibility of repairing the device or proceed with its complete replacement. To disassemble the water pump, the master must:
- Loosen the pump drive belt, then remove the belt from the pulley.
- After that, you need to drain all the liquid from the system, including from the engine and radiator.
- Then you should dismantle the pipe connected directly to the pump.
- The last step to dismantle the pump is to remove the pump from the engine. To do this, unscrew the pump housing.
Disassembling the pump
To disassemble the YaMZ water pump for further repair, it is necessary:
- Remove the nuts that hold the pipe in place.
- Remove the nozzle from the pump.
- Lock the pulley to prevent shaft rotation.
- Remove the plug by turning it out of the threaded hole.
- Screw the puller nut into the resulting hole in the pulley, and then, turning the bolt, remove the pulley from the shaft.
- Bend the guides of the mechanical seal housing, and then remove the cuff with the spring and the frame assembly.
- Press the pulley with a special puller.
- Pull circlip out of pump groove.
- Remove shaft with sprinkler and bearings from pump housing.
- In the event that the body of the mechanical seal made of brass has no visible damage, then it can not be pulled out. Otherwise, it must be removed and replaced with a new one.
- This completes the disassembly of the pump.
Assembly after repair
After the pump has been completely disassembled, a malfunction has been identified, all damaged elements have been replaced with new ones, all serviceable parts should be washed, then thoroughly dried. You can use compressed air for this.
Next, you need to assemble the product for its further installation on the car engine. To do this, perform a number of operations:
- Press bearings and sprinkler onto the shaft. In doing so, lubricate the shaft with diesel engine oil. The bearings must be installed so that the sealing washers are on the outside. All the pressure for pressing in must be applied only to the inner ring of the bearings.
- Next, it is necessary to fill the open cavities between the bearings, formed after pressing, with special lubricant “Litol-24.
- Lubricate the shaft with previously unused engine oil.
- During the next operation, the shaft assembly must be installed in the water pump housing. It is necessary to provide a fixed stop on the opposite side of the shaft.
- Next, you need to install the mechanical seal of the brass body.
- Put the rubber cuff assembly with a spring and several frames.
- Next, put the cuff on the sealing sleeve.
- Then it is necessary to lubricate with a thin layer the bore of the pulley, as well as the outer surface of the cuff, which is made of rubber.
- Install reinforced sleeve and seal sleeve.
- Fit the pulley into the rubber sleeve and the bush for sealing. To avoid various distortions and the occurrence of gases in the YaMZ-238 cooling system, it is necessary to grip the cuff with both hands, and then insert it into the bore of the pulley.
- Next, it is necessary to press the pump pulley assembly onto the shaft, but before doing this, remember to lubricate both parts at the contact points with previously unused engine oil.
- Lock the pulley to prevent it from rotating.
- Screw in the plug tightly.
- Fit the rubber ring and sleeve into the water pump housing.
- Put a ring in the groove of the nozzles.
- Connect the nozzles of the YaMZ-238 cooling system to the pump.
- Secure the nozzles with hardware.
This completes the assembly of the water pump.
