Working with a popular text editor is inseparable from knowing how to number pages in Word. This is an extremely important formatting element, so every PC user should be able to handle it. Many newcomers make a very popular mistake when trying to assign pages an index number manually. Of course, if the document consists of one or two sheets, then this option still passes, and then not always. But what about when a text file contains tens or even hundreds of pages? And thousands? Naturally, you canβt put it down manually, and besides, in the case of editing, the contents will inevitably shift, which means that you will have to delete such numbering in order to put in a new one.
Version differences
At the moment, there are several very popular versions of the Microsoft text editor, which, although they use similar principles, still have some differences in the algorithms of their work. Therefore, it would be useful to compare them to find out how to number the pages in the Word released in different years. Now the most popular are Word 2003 for Windows XP, 2007 and 2010 for Vista and Seven, and 2013 for the new OS - Windows 8. It is worth noting that there are fundamental differences only between the 2003 version and newer ones, since starting Since 2007, there has been no dramatic update, but only the improvement of individual functioning elements.
Opportunities "Word"
So, to understand how to number pages in Word, you need to get acquainted with its capabilities, which are located in the Insert menu. Opening it, you can notice an item with a name that speaks for itself - "Page Numbering". It is inside this section that contains tools that automatically assign each sheet of a text document an appropriate serial number, which is set in special fields, called "headers and footers". Having studied the structure of this item, it will not be difficult for the user to even independently figure out how to number pages in Word, since the interface of this program is very friendly.
Numbering process
Thus, by opening the "Insert" menu and selecting the desired section from its list, you can begin to assign serial numbers to each sheet of a text file. As already mentioned, this is not difficult to do, and after studying the settings, you can learn some simple tricks. First of all, you need to pay attention to the items "Position" and "Alignment". Using them, you can set whether the number will be displayed on the page: top or bottom, right, left or center. You also need to pay attention to the field "Number on the first ...". It is available only in the 2003 version of the program. In Microsoft Word 2010, 2007, it is not, because this mechanism is implemented differently there. If there is a checkmark in the indicated field, then on the 1st sheet of the document the number will not be indicated, and on the second sheet there will be, respectively, the number 2 and so on. This is very convenient for students when the first page is a title page on which, according to the requirements for scientific work, the numbering should not be displayed. The βFormat ...β option will also be very useful - by going to it, you can choose the way the number is displayed, specify with which number the numbering will start, and so on.
The main difference between the versions
The mechanisms for setting and formatting the numbering described above are based on the 2003 version. In newer products, this process is carried out according to a similar algorithm, just its implementation is made more clearly. The main difference is manifested in cases where you need to remove the number from the 1st page. How to do this in Word 2003 has already been described above, but what if MS Office 2010, 2007 or even 2013 is used? Everything is simple here - just double-click on the number. As a result, a window for working with headers and footers will open, where you need to put a check mark next to the "Special footer for the first page" box in the "Design" tab.
