Theater History
The Volkov Theater (Yaroslavl) began its career in the 18th century. It is named after its founder. The theater was opened was the merchant son Fedor Grigorievich Volkov. He assembled the first troupe, which included people of various professions who had no relation to art.
The first performances took place in a leather barn. Soon Fedor built a special room for his theater. F. Volkov invested in art not only the soul, but also large material means. At the end of the 19th century, the Russian Academic Drama Theater. F. Volkova became famous throughout Russia and was recognized as one of the best in the country. Many great artists debuted on its stage. Among them, Leonid Sobinov. This world-famous opera tenor began his creative work even as a simple extras and grew up as a soloist of the Imperial Theaters. Building

The building in which it is located was built in 1911. The interiors and facades were designed by architect Nikolai Spirin, who won the competition, the jury of which was a commission from Moscow led by F. Shekhtel.
N. Spirin created a building unprecedented in scale for the province. It was built over two years. At the grand opening of the new building was attended even by V. Nemirovich-Danchenko himself.
The first room in which the theater lived at the end of the 19th century was built by the architect Pankov, in the same place where the new one is now located. But at the beginning of the 20th century there was a need to build a new building for rehearsals and performances, as the old one was very dilapidated.
In 2012-2015, the building underwent extensive reconstruction. The mechanics of the scene have been improved. The theater was equipped with the latest technology. The stage tablet was covered with special varieties of wood and is very durable.
Also, the facade was restored during the repair. The foundation was protected from water, as an underground river flows under the building.
Light and sound equipment was updated on both stages.

During the reconstruction, the building was brought in exactly the form that was conceived by its architect N. Spirin. But, due to the fact that the First World War began, he could not realize all the plans.

The Volkov Theater is named after an outstanding actor who lived in the 18th century. Fyodor Grigorievich was born in 1729. He was a versatile person and owned many types of art.
F. Volkov was from a merchant family. In 1750, he founded a public theater in Yaroslavl, which he maintained with his own money.
The troupe, which Fyodor Grigoryevich assembled, consisted of former seminarians, clerical workers, merchants, artisans, etc. The level of their acting was much higher than amateur. With this, the theater attracted the attention of St. Petersburg.
In 1752, the Yaroslavl troupe received an invitation to work in the capital. In the same year, the artists left their hometown and moved to St. Petersburg.
The best actors of the theater were sent by Empress Elizabeth to study. Having received education, they became the core of Russia's first professional theater troupe.
Fedor Volkov is considered the founder of the Russian theater. His successor I. Dmitrevsky opened the first acting school in the capital.
