Theater History
The Comedy Theater (Nizhny Novgorod) opened its doors in 1942. Then he had another name - "Sniper". Initially, it was a theater of variety miniatures. It was created to support the people's stamina during the difficult war years. Laughter here was a weapon to fight the enemy.
The first years of the troupe worked in the building of the Philharmonic on Sverdlov Street. By that time, the musical part was headed by the famous composer B. Mokrousov.
In 1946, the Sniper was reorganized. Since then, the theater began to be called the Nizhny Novgorod Comedy Theater. For the next several decades, the troupe worked in the building of the former Peasant Bank on Mayakovsky Street. It didn’t quite fit the theater: the stage was small, the hall uncomfortable, but the artists worked despite everything.
In the 60s, Elina Bystritskaya, Ekaterina Raikina, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya and other amazing actresses came to Nizhny Novgorod with entreprise.
In the 70s, the repertoire of the theater was built on the classics. The leaders of that time were adherents of the traditions of the Russian psychological theater school.
In 1983, S.E. Lerman became the main director of the theater. This is a legendary person with whom an entire era is associated. Thanks to his arrival at the theater, the troupe began a new life. Semyon Emanuilovich brought his students with him. It was they who became the backbone of the updated troupe. Thus, the team united experience and youth enthusiasm. The performances staged by S.E. Lerman were consonant with that time. Many works of Soviet writers first saw the scene in the Comedy Theater, directed by Semyon Emanuilovich.
During the years of perestroika, the troupe wandered around other people's stage venues, toured villages and neighboring towns. The building on Mayakovsky Street, in which the artists worked several decades before, fell into decay. Only thanks to S. Lerman in those difficult years, the theater survived and did not cease to exist, like many.
In 1999, the theater was given the building on Gruzinskaya Street. But before the troupe could begin to use it, it was necessary to carry out its large-scale reconstruction and restoration. It took about a year. The best architects of the city were engaged in creating the design of the building. The result was a real temple of art. A comfortable hall, a large stage, spectator chairs from France, chic interiors. Then the name appeared that remains to this day - "Comedy" -theatre (Nizhny Novgorod). His poster at the beginning of the 21st century consisted of classical and modern works.
In 2005, the second stage of the theater opened - the Small Stage. At first, it hosted performances for children. In 2009, adult performances began to be shown here.
In 2011, the theater’s repertoire included a new genre for him - the musical.
The troupe actively collaborates with well-known directors, artists and composers from St. Petersburg and Moscow, successfully touring and winning awards in competitions and festivals.
Today its artistic director is D.I. Konovalov.
