The most common conifers in private areas are precisely pine trees, in particular Vaterri pine. This variety belongs to the decorative conifers and is widely used to uniquely landscape design.
Grade Features
The main feature of this pine variety is the shape of its crown, which resembles an open umbrella. Trees are visible from afar, and they are in harmony with almost all the plants on the territory.
At the beginning of its life, the plant has a thick, columnar crown. With age, it becomes more loose, and the trunk acquires a reddish hue. In height it can reach 6 m, the same in width. In one year it grows by 12 cm both in width and in height. The color of the needles is quite unusual, closer to blue, sometimes bluish-steel.
Very often, trees of this unusual shape are mistakenly classified as shrubs. Vaterri pine is no exception.
In addition to form, this variety differs from others in coniferous ones in that it does not tolerate gas contamination. That is why it is almost impossible to see this tree in the city.
Vaterri pine (reviews of the variety note its beauty and unusualness) can grow on absolutely any soil, whether it is alkaline soil or acidic. She tolerates even the most severe frosts very well.
Pine of Waterreri: planting and care
As already mentioned, this pine variety is very unpretentious in the care and selection of a planting site. The ordinary pine Vaterri feels great (planting and leaving will not cause difficulties for you) even on the most depleted soil. Acidic and marshy soils also will not become an obstacle to active growth. However, it is better not to plant the Waterreri pine on humus-free soils or open white sands.
There are no special rules for planting a coniferous plant . The only things to consider are the landing time (spring is ideal) and the level of gas pollution. You need to prepare a hole, which should be about 1.5 times larger than the lump of your chosen plant. Pour this recess with water that you should not spare for this purpose. After this, you can place the seedling in this pit, while thoroughly straightening the roots. Particular attention should be paid to ensure that the root neck (the place in which the trunk is connected to the root) is called on the soil surface. If you ignore this, you can only achieve that the plant suffocates. At the end, you need to fill the hole with earth and tamp.
Do not forget about mulching the soil. This procedure will help retain moisture and air in the soil, protect the plant from weeds. In addition, mulch enriches the soil with various nutrients in the process of decay, which undoubtedly improves it.
After landing care
When planting Vaterri pine, you need to take into account the level of gas contamination in the place you have chosen, as well as prevent soil compaction and salinization.
Vaterri pine is a sun-loving plant, however, during the first three years after planting, it is better to protect the plant from the effects of the spring sun. To do this, you need to achieve a shade of light or just cover the tree with burlap. These safety measures will save him from possible burns.
In winter, small seedlings feel very well themselves, which under the cover of snow completely preserve their vitality. If there is not enough snow in winter, then you should take care of additional protection.
Crown formation
The trimming procedure is best done in May. At this time, there is a rapid active growth of those kidneys that were laid a year ago. It is from these buds that new young shoots are formed, which are called "candles."
As a rule, attention is paid only to resinous “candles” (these are pine shoots on which unopened needles are located). If such a procedure is carried out regularly, even the most unpromising seedlings can be turned into fluffy compact trees. Thanks to the shortening of young shoots, pine can be given absolutely any shape you want.
The entire pruning procedure must be done before these “candles” are fully opened.
During the process of crown formation, some shoots are completely removed, while others are only slightly shortened. In addition, you can win due to different levels of shortening. However, it is worth remembering that too much shortening can lead to the fact that the growth of pine will greatly slow down. Also, cutting off the shoots, you risk that in place of the stump, a so-called prickly “ball” may form.
The Waterreri Pine is excellent for forming bonsai or nivaki trees, as well as various geometric shapes, such as a cube or ball.
When circumcision, care must be taken not to damage the pine needles. In no case cannabis needles be shortened, only tarry “candles”.
Application features
As a rule, Vaterri pine is part of a large composition, which should take into account the final size of the pine. In no case should you place it on a roller coaster. It goes well with juniper and arborvitae, as well as pillow-shaped forms of fir trees, for example Vermont Gold.
