Like any other disease, strabismus in an adult has symptoms. It is not necessary to visit an ophthalmologist to understand that a person has strabismus. First of all, you need to pay attention to the words of people around. If many people say that they are somehow looking strange, you need to think about it.
Causes
Strabismus is a violation of peripheral vision, or rather, a violation of the position of the eyes. In such cases, one or both eyes deviate from a straight path.
Doctors identified two types of strabismus: friendly and paralytic. With friendly eyes deviate alternately, usually at the same distance.
Paralytic strabismus is characterized in that the eye is limited in movement, statically fixed in the wrong position, due to pinching of the optic nerve. Often, to correct this type of strabismus, an eye surgeon is required. As a rule, surgical interventions in this case fix the problem forever.
Depending on the reasons, treatment of strabismus in adults is carried out by different methods.
Causes of Congenital Strabismus
Strabismus is congenital. In such cases, the reasons may be:
- diseases of the central nervous system;
- congenital difference in the anatomy of the eye;
- ocular neuromuscular damage.
Reasons for acquired strabismus
The causes of the acquired disease include:
- vision problems that are ignored (farsightedness, myopia);
- a sharp decrease in vision of the right or left eye;
- anisometropia;
- strokes
- mental injuries.
Symptoms
Symptoms with such a disease can be pronounced:
- Usually this is indicated by the pupil. It can be deflected strongly towards the temple or nose.
- People often have to squint when they look into the distance.
- If a person doubles in the eyes at the moment when he looks at a fixed object.
- A person’s head is slightly turned or tilted when he is looking.
At the same time, other symptoms may be observed:
- Dizziness.
- Difficulties in determining the distance between objects.
All these symptoms indicate the initial development of strabismus, or, conversely, that the disease is in a state of neglect. If this disease in a person is in a neglected state, the people around him will immediately notice this disease and will be able to point to it. A person with strabismus has to constantly tilt his head so that the object does not double in his eyes.
Types of Strabismus
The medical term strabismus (strabismus is commonly used) is understood to mean an ophthalmological problem when the ocular visual ocular axes have different orientations. The types or types of strabismus depend, first of all, on the axial orientation, how long the disease manifested itself, and how long it takes.
The following types of strabismus are:
- Diverging and converging (the most common). In the first case, the eye axes are directed from each other, in the second they converge on the nose. Both of these species belong to the horizontal type of strabismus. A type of strabismus, when the optic optic axes are directed vertically one up and the other down, is called vertical.
- There is also circular strabismus, in which the visual axes are rotated in relation to each other clockwise or counterclockwise.
- Friendly, in which mismatch of the axes of the eyes is recorded. Moreover, the gaze is directed in one direction.
- Paralytic, developed after an injury or illness.
In addition, depending on the period of occurrence, strabismus is divided into acquired during life and congenital, permanent or periodically occurring. Depending on accommodation (the ability to increase the refractive power when transferring eyes from distant objects to nearby ones), squint is divided into 3 types:
- accommodation (fully corrected by special points);
- partially accommodative (it is possible to correct only partially);
- non-accommodative (points cannot be corrected).
There is a type of strabismus such as monolateral (right or left) strabismus, when only one eye is affected. If strabismus periodically changes its location, then we are talking about alternating strabismus. It should be noted that special glasses help correct vision only with alternating strabismus. With monolateral it is not possible.
Surgery
If the usual methods for a year do not bring results, it is necessary to treat strabismus in adults with surgery. This disease manifests itself in an adult due to the inability of the brain to adapt quickly. As a result, a person can often see double vision before the eyes, and just one eye begins to see objects poorly.
Do not pull, as traditional lens treatment may not work. In this case, surgical treatment of strabismus in adults is used, which can be classified into two types:
- The usual operation. At the same time, it is very rarely used, since injuries can remain after it, and the rehabilitation course takes a very long time. This operation allows you to strengthen or weaken the function of the muscles of the sick eye. This is done in order to correct strabismus. Depending on the complexity of the disease, the type of operation is selected. In addition, a traditional operation is expensive. For surgery on one sore eye you have to pay 46,000 rubles. Normal surgery helps in 90% of cases.
- Laser correction surgery is another treatment for strabismus in adults. It is most often used to treat patients suffering from this disease. He is considered the most sparing. Individually for each person, the degree and type of intervention is selected. Different types of equipment can be used during laser correction. Laser correction helps in 95% of cases. Such an operation is even more expensive. Its price starts at 65,000 rubles for one sore eye.
The usual operation for the treatment of strabismus in adults and laser correction can eliminate the disease. These methods make it possible to cure only 90% of 100 patients from strabismus. If the disease is in a state of neglect, several surgical interventions will be necessary on the sore eye.
Hardware treatment
Many are interested in the question of whether it is possible to treat strabismus in an adult, and if so, what methods of treatment are offered by today's medicine. The question is undoubtedly rather sensitive, and of course, I would like to consider all the pros and cons of certain procedures.
The main task of the ophthalmologist is to improve or restore the lost ability of the eye to focus on the image properly. Consultation with a good eye surgeon will shed light on a specific situation - which treatment method is right for you. After all, you always want to achieve maximum results without surgical intervention.
Hardware treatment of latent strabismus in adults is one of the ways to influence the perception and focus of the image in a non-surgical way. World ophthalmology massively practices this type of strabismus correction. This method is good because it does not require surgical intervention, but treatment with the help of “Sinoptofora” requires serious concentration from the patient. After all, much depends on him.
The device transmits independent images to the sick left and right eye, the patient's task is to learn how to reduce them into one. For example, if a person with strabismus looks at a flower in a pot, one of his eyes fixes the pot and the other a flower. The treatment of strabismus with the apparatus almost always ends with success.
The course of treatment lasts a total of 10-20 days, and the session from 40 to 70 minutes. It all depends on the complexity of each individual case and the patient's perception. With a persistent approach, this type of treatment leads to excellent results and corrects all unpleasant dysfunctions of the optic nerve, restores the elasticity of the visual receptor lost under various circumstances.
This method can be used to treat divergent strabismus in adults and its other species.
Pencil exercise
Treatment of strabismus in adults at home occurs through exercise. Similar procedures are intended for people with strabismus (heterotropy). Classes are based on the fact that a person with a disease focuses and watches a small object (pencil or finger). For this patient they sit on a chair, stand in front of him at arm's length and begin to lead a finger, a pencil, etc. from his nose to himself.
A person who deals with the patient should follow his eyes. At the same time, both eyes should move towards the nose when performing. If one of them deviates from your side, start the exercise anew. So you need to do for 5-6 minutes a day.
Light procedure
Future training consists in turning your eyes to the rays of any light source (preferably the sun). We give an example, with strabismus of the right eye, it is required:
- turn around to face the light;
- close your hand with a healthy eye;
- turn your head to the right side and try to see the rays of the light source.
You can replace the sun with improvised devices. You can use a candle, a reflection on a mirror surface or another sparkling object.
Eyes to close. How to do it? With palms crossed in the form of a roof, one needs to close his eyes. The eyeball should be in the center of your palm. The nose should be between your palms. If you open your eyes, then the light should not fall through your fingers. In other words, there should be no gaps.
Geometric figures
There is another no less effective way, but more interesting for both children and adults. To complete the exercise you will need:
- A sheet of paper (blank).
- Pencil.
- Assistant.
Let's get started. Draw on the leaf squares of the same size and in these squares draw simple geometric shapes (circle, oval).
The main thing is that each figure would have a couple at least. You can draw 3-4 pieces. The main thing is a variety of figures. Pass this leaflet to the patient and give him the task - to find all the repeating figures. This exercise makes the human eye focus at one point.
Prevention
In order not to have to treat strabismus, it is better not to allow its development. To do this, it is recommended to follow simple rules:
- Timely and correctly treat diseases of the nasopharynx.
- With an increase in blood pressure, you should regularly measure its performance and, if necessary, take medications.
- Patients with pathological changes in the eyes and people suffering from diabetes should take medications that will prevent vision loss.
- Stop smoking and drinking large amounts of alcohol, as these habits can cause chronic diseases that affect vision.
- Reduce eye strain.
- To be examined by an ophthalmologist 2-3 times a year.
- Do gymnastics for the eyes, observe hand hygiene, choose glasses and contact lenses correctly.
- Do not read on the phone or tablet in vehicles, as eye strain and frequent shaking contribute to the development of strabismus.
- Eat foods rich in vitamins, especially carrots and blueberries.
Reviews about the treatment of strabismus in adults are only positive. Especially effective is laser therapy and surgery. Strabismus does not go away on its own, and incorrect treatment or its complete absence often causes a catastrophic visual impairment.
