A. S. Pushkin, Madonna: An Analysis of the Poem

Pushkin laid out all his love experiences, failures and successes on paper. “Madonna” refers to the poet’s love lyrics, this is one of the poems dedicated to Natalia Goncharova, the wife of Alexander Sergeyevich. It was written just six months before the wedding, in 1830. Pushkin repeatedly asks his chosen one to become his wife, and this time he receives consent. The poet is in a state of euphoria, getting ready for the wedding and looking forward to a happy and prosperous family life.

Natalya Goncharova, along with her parents, leaves Moscow for a short while, Alexander Sergeyevich writes letters to her, informing that he hung a portrait of a “blond Madonna” in the house reminding him of his bride. The girl replies that soon he will admire his wife, not the picture. These lines from the letter inspired the man so much that he wrote his famous work “Madonna”. Pushkin, whose verse radiates an atmosphere of harmony, peace and happiness, always dreamed of a successful marriage, built on love and mutual respect.

Alexander Sergeyevich thanks God for having sent him such happiness, without suspecting that very little time will pass and he will be ready to terminate the engagement. Pushkin wrote the poem “Madonna” in anticipation of a miracle; he hoped that his life would radically change for the better with the advent of his family. Goncharova was from a noble family, but impoverished, so the poet was unpleasantly surprised by the fact that together with his bride he would hang a bunch of family debts on him.

one of obligations to him. Despite some controversy, the wedding still took place. It is known that after the marriage, not a single poem was dedicated to his wife Pushkin. The "Madonna" appeared before him not so holy and immaculate, therefore her image was essentially faded. The poet was a very superstitious person, and it was a real blow for him that during the wedding, a candle went out in his hands and the bride dropped his wedding ring. Pushkin considered these events a bad omen. "Madonna" and remained only a picture of a happy family life. The poet loved his wife, and she until the last remained for him the most coveted woman on earth. But nevertheless, Alexander Sergeyevich regarded marriage as an inevitable punishment, and not a gift of heaven, and he was not mistaken in his evil forebodings. It was because of Natalia Goncharova that he went on a duel with Dantes in order to defend the right to own his wife. Perhaps if it were not for marriage, then Pushkin would have lived a longer life ...
