The production of ZIL series cars at OJSC Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant began back in 1953. One of the most popular models was the ZIL-554, which came off the assembly line in 1957. The first models of the ZIL-MMZ-554 car were produced with gasoline engines. But during a difficult economic situation, when a decrease in the production of low-octane grades led to a rise in the price of gasoline, carburetors were abandoned. To replace them came diesel engines D-245. The new modification was more economical.

The basic models of the dump truck initially had two gasoline engine options:
