Media reported that before a series of explosions in the air gate, a shootout was heard that was fired from a car parked at the airport. After the attack on the air harbor, an explosion also occurred at a nearby metro station.
On that day, many wounded were delivered to the Bakırköy clinic. The exits and entrances of the airport were instantly closed. Takeoff was allowed only to those aircraft that have already entered the taxiway.
Turkish Prime Minister Yıldırım Binali called the organizers of the attack. According to him, the Islamic State terrorist formation was behind this incident. On the morning of June 29, the Ataturk Kemal air hub resumed operations.
