How to disable standby?

As you know, on any computer device that is running Windows, initially the default is activated the transition to standby mode, that is , standby mode with reduced power consumption. What is it and how to disable the mode? It is further proposed to consider the issue in detail.

What is standby time?

If initially such an option was used solely to simply reduce power consumption, subsequently this mode began to be used while preserving the settings of running programs.

Delayed Waiting Modes

At the moment, in the latest versions of Windows operating systems, the standby mode has two categories: sleep and hibernation (not counting the hybrid mode). How to set the necessary parameters correctly, we will consider a little later, but for now it’s worthwhile to dwell on some historical facts.

History of occurrence

At the dawn of evolution, computer technology, which was a huge software and hardware systems, could work only in two states - “On” or “Off”. Even the appearance of the first desktop PCs did not yet imply the introduction of an energy-saving mode.

Energy star

The first innovator in this area was Energy Star, which offered some interesting developments. This was due to the fact that several users could work on one computer, and the downtime increased quite strongly. And for the first time, the standby mode was applied to monitors, which at a certain time of inactivity of the user passed, so to speak, into the "semi-working mode", saving the picture on the screen, but darkening it. In this case, it was a matter of preventing overheating of the cathode ray tubes that were used on the antediluvian monitors and protecting the screen from burning out (then even screensavers were used).

Everything changed when ATX units began to be used for desktop computers. With their appearance, it became possible to turn off not only monitors, but also the main components of the computer itself by de-energizing. Initially, the technology was to suspend the operation of the central processor, RAM and hard disk, but over time it became possible to completely turn off all output electrical circuits, leaving only one that was attached to the power button.

Even later, a solution was proposed to deduce from this mode by mouse action. At the moment, on some stationary PCs, this method is still used, but on laptops, the binding goes exactly to the power button.

The difference between sleep and hibernation

In the latest versions of Windows operating systems, it is supposed to transfer the computer system with prolonged inactivity to either sleep mode or hibernation mode. But what is the difference, after all, both of them are exactly the standby mode?

A dream can be represented as a pause in the work of all applications and system components. It seems to press the corresponding button on the player or tape recorder. All processes simply pause, and upon exiting the mode are activated again.

Hibernation has a slightly different nature, since in this mode there is a complete blackout of all elements inside the computer, and voltage is supplied only to maintain the primary BIOS. In order for the programs to work upon exit, an exact copy of the current memory status is written to the hard drive at the same time, with the settings of all running programs saved, which is why the free space on the hard drive is drastically reduced (the hyberfil.sys file is responsible for this, from which you can to get rid of, which will be considered separately).

How to configure standby mode in Windows?

But it was all pure theory. It's time to move on to practical action. So, the standby mode (sleep mode) in all recent versions of Windows is configured by changing the installed power scheme. Access to such parameters on stationary computer terminals can be obtained through the standard “Control Panel”, and on laptops it is enough to use the menu called up by the PCM on the battery charge icon.

Power Schemes

After entering, a window will appear in which the available schemes will be presented. Typically, these are balanced power modes, energy saving and high performance. For each of them, the default options are installed, but users do not always like them.

You can rebuild the parameters by selecting the appropriate mode and clicking the hyperlink to change them. Typically, the settings include turning off the display, putting it into sleep mode, and adjusting the screen brightness. If for some reason the user does not like these parameters, you can set your own values for each of them.

How to disable this option?

As for how to disable the standby mode, it is necessary to set the value of "Never" in all fields of disconnection. But this, as it turns out, is not enough. Next, you need to click on the link below in the parameters that are currently unavailable, and set the appropriate options already there, because even with the use of a common scheme for some installed devices, nothing will change. In particular, this applies to USB-equipment, network adapters, when disconnected which may lose communication, etc.

Actions with a cover on a laptop

If you use laptops, in the options on the left in the list you can see the setting of actions when closing the lid. By default, closing puts the device into standby mode (and not in sleep, but in hibernation). If desired, you can turn off any action, and at the same time configure the options for actions when you press the power button.

Hibernation Disable

But let's see how to remove the standby mode, namely hibernation, in order, as they say, to kill two birds with one stone - turn off the mode itself and get rid of the voluminous hyberfil.sys file. To do this, you need to run the command console with administrator rights and set the line powercfg-h off in it to execute. After restarting the system, this mode will be disabled, and with the removal of the above file, which will free up additional space in the system partition.

Peripheral Actions

Finally, a few words about how to deal with devices that can bring a computer out of this mode or turn off by themselves. In the “Task Manager”, first select the mouse, through RMB, go to the properties and on the power tab uncheck the box to allow the computer to exit this mode.

For other devices, the same tab is used, but only with the deactivation of the line for allowing the equipment to be turned off when entering sleep mode.
