The Skype computer program, which allows organizing video and audio conferences between users via the Internet, is known to everyone. Even people far from computer technology have heard about it. Recently, Microsoft became the owner of the program, so you can expect deeper integration with many packages. Nevertheless, each user should know how to configure sound in Skype. This need is caused by the fact that being an ordinary program, the application must meet the requirements of the operating system in which it runs.
Programs and operating system
Often users who are interested in how to set up sound in Skype forget that those days have passed when programs could work with equipment directly, bypassing the OS. Today's programming model assumes that if the driver of a device is missing or installed incorrectly, then absolutely all applications that access its capabilities will not work as expected from them. Thus, setting up Skype on a laptop or desktop computer should begin with the installation of a sound card driver. Quiet sound, intermittent flow, poor microphone audibility - this is not a complete list of the troubles that may arise when using an outdated version of the control program for the audio adapter. This moment is very important and should not be ignored.
Opening application settings
Let's consider how to configure sound in Skype when the driver is already installed in the system. After starting the program, open the tab “Tools” menu and proceed to “Settings”. The window that appears is divided into two vertical blocks: the left with drop-down items and the right, where necessary adjustments are made to the selected parameter. If there is a question about how to configure sound in Skype, then select “General” on the left and in the “Sound Settings” drop-down list. The right parameters appear that can be adjusted. The topmost item is microphone setup. Here you can specify which device will be used in Skype (if there are several) and check / uncheck the box to automatically adjust the gain mode. In most cases, the adjustment can be entrusted to the automation (it is important that the driver works correctly) and only in rare situations can the microphone sensitivity / gain slider be manually moved: shifting to the right makes it “louder” for the interlocutor, and “quieter” to the left. Below is the “Speakers” item. In the drop-down list, you can select the desired output device. If there are no specific requirements, then it should match the default one.

Let’s explain. On Windows, there’s a speaker icon next to the clock. By right-clicking on it and selecting “Playback devices”, you can see a list of available sound-output solutions. One of them is marked as "default." That it should be selected in the Skype settings. The checkbox “automatic tuning” smooths out the differences between too loud and excessively quiet sounds - it is recommended to use this option.
If there is no call sound
Sometimes users pay attention that when there is an incoming call there is no sound, but just a plate is displayed that you can not see. This is due to lost settings. Skype calls are set in the Sounds section of the General menu. If you are satisfied with the standard settings, then click the "Return to Default Settings" button.
