As you know, any war sooner or later ends in peace. And therefore it is not surprising that the Soviet Union, which once defeated Nazi Germany, after the end of hostilities began to actively rebuild the destroyed state property. It goes without saying that any construction requires special equipment. In this regard, a special load fell on the Minsk Automobile Plant, which began the production of its own timber truck. We will talk about him in this article and find out, in particular, how much the frame from the MAZ-509 weighs.
Updated fleet
Initially, the 500th series, to which this car belongs, was progressive and upheld to some extent the consciousness of Soviet engineers and drivers. And all because the developers of the car suggested placing the motor directly under the cab, and not in front of it, as it was before. Also, the cabin itself received the property of overturning, which made it possible to easily reach the main nodes of the MAZ-509. In addition, the lack of a hood made it possible to increase the length of the entire truck and increase its load capacity. Initially, such an engineering proposal was met with hostility, but foreign experience has shown that such machines are quite viable, and therefore the technical commission approved the project.
Production start
On April 6, 1966, the assembly of the first instance of the MAZ-509P began. This timber truck was produced, as they say, by the piece and had certain disadvantages, which were quickly eliminated directly on ready-made machines.
The technical parameters of this truck had significant differences from those cars that the Minsk plant produced earlier. To begin with, the MAZ-509 bridges were all-wheel drive, and this unit was the only one that went into the series.
Decent change
The phased technical modernization of the car led to the fact that she was able to drive faster. The speed of the truck increased from 60 km / h to 65 km / h, which was made possible thanks to a change in gear ratios of the gearbox. MAZ-509 differed from its ancestor and the fact that it had a wider wheelbase, the value of which grew immediately by 10 centimeters. A dual-disk clutch also appeared, and load capacity increased (by half a ton). The front axle has also undergone changes: conventional gearboxes were installed on it instead of planetary.
Destination
MAZ-509, whose frame was characterized by increased rigidity, was developed and served for the transportation of timber both on special roads and on gauge tracks. Moreover, he had the opportunity to go into logging. To ensure optimal loading / unloading conditions, the machine began to be equipped with a winch in 1969, which has a pivoting horse and folding racks. Connick was able to withstand a load of 5500 kgf. The truck was equipped with a trailer-dissolution: TMZ-803M or GBK-9383. These mechanisms had two axles and a self-dragging device, which made it possible, if necessary, to fold the trailer carriage and ship it to the tractor. In those moments when the trolley was not in operation and was loaded onto the tractor, MAZ became biaxial. When the need arose for transporting wood, the trailer was laid out and the truck transformed into a four-axle one, both of which had leading axles.
Features
MAZ-509 had a six-cylinder power unit (engine) with the arrangement of cylinders in the form of the letter V. There was also a water cooling system. The motor power was such that the timber truck could be a truck tractor. There were differences and transmission, which allowed the car to be four-wheel drive.
Technical details
MAZ-509, the technical characteristics of which are given below, was a fairly powerful timber carrier with a high degree of cross-country ability, which was explained by the need for its use in places far from human-inhabited places having a difficult terrain and weather conditions.
The truck parameters are as follows:
- Length - 6770 mm.
- Height - 2900 mm.

Interesting Facts
It is worth noting that the MAZ-509 was repeatedly subjected to experiments. They were related to the fact that other all-wheel drive cars were developed on its basis. One of these was the MAZ-509B dump truck, completely unified with the 509th model, as well as an army tent truck. However, for some reason, none of the above options entered mass production, even though it fully met all technical standards and requirements of that time.
In 1978, it rolled off the MAZ-509A conveyor, which differed from its predecessors only in external features, but not in its internal content. The production of this truck was completed almost simultaneously with the collapse of the Soviet Union, but some vehicles are still being actively used to this day.
