Until recently, carp fishing enthusiasts were not particularly worried about the type of reel for the rod and its functions. Both casting and fishing had to be carried out by anyone who knew how. But with the advent of feeder gear and the advent of high-quality imported fishing equipment on our market, it turned out that carp fishing can be much more effective and reckless.
Today, specialized carp reels can be purchased at any fishing store. However, their assortment is so wide that sometimes it’s not so easy to choose the most suitable one. We will talk about the most popular manufacturers and models of reels for carp fishing, as well as discuss the features of the main types of equipment for this fish.
A bit of carp reel history
Carp reels, as well as rods and most rigs, came to us from the UK. Richard Walker, a world-famous carp angler, for the first time in the 50s of the last century, suggested using models with a fixed spool instead of the usual inertia. After a while, the first prototypes of modern designs appeared - inertialess reels for spinning “Mitchell-300”, and a little later, “Mitchell-350”. Today they are used both for predator fishing and for peaceful fish, however, already in a modernized form.
Since then, carp reels have been improved as separate models by various manufacturers. Since the 1980s, two Japanese companies, Shimano and Daiva, have been leading and constantly competing in this market. Manufacturers from Europe are trying to keep up with them, but today Japan remains the leader.
Basic requirements for modern carp reels
Feeder fishing in most cases involves long-range and accurate casting. Without a good coil, you must admit, there is no way to do it. It should not only contain a sufficient amount of fishing line, but also easily throw it when casting, excluding hooks and tangles.
In addition, reels for carp fishing, given the size and strength of this fish, must have a reliable friction brake. He will not let go of the catch caught on the hook, and also protect the tackle from the cliff.
Needless to say, the carp provides serious resistance when fishing, and often it takes a long time to get it out of the water. The entire load falls on the coil. If it is not reliable enough, it will not be enough for one serious fishing. Therefore, when choosing a reel for carp, preference should be given to proven branded models.
What is byteraner and why is it needed
On the shelves of specialized fishing stores, recently you can see reels with baytraner. This foreign word appeared on the price tags not so long ago, but immediately disturbed the minds of our fishermen. What kind of thing is this and why is the carp coil equipped with it? Baytraner is a system designed to temporarily disable the friction brake in certain conditions. It allows hooked fish to freely pull fishing line from the spool. This will continue until the angler engages the friction clutch. But why all this?
It is all about the power of the carp and its habits. For example, with a sharp bite, he easily drags the rod along with the stand, the fisherman does not have time to blink an eye. The same thing can happen when the fishing rod is in the hands of the angler. But what about the friction brake?
The friction clutch is usually tuned to catch the fish, taking into account its size and strength, but during a sudden unexpected jerk, it may be useless.
How byteraner works
The byteraner is switched on by switching a special lever or bracket in the rear of the coil. This is done after casting and pulling the gear. From the moment of its inclusion the friction clutch will be in a neutral position. Now the rod can be safely put on a stand without fear of a sharp bite.
When the carp pecks and begins to leave, the spool will gradually give the fishing line until the angler stops this process. The byteraner can be turned off manually, with the same lever that it turns on, or automatically when the handle of the coil is rotated.
By the way, this system is used not only for carp fishing. Many spinless reels for spinning also have a byteraner. He copes well with both pike perch and pike.
Carp reels with byteraner manufactured by Daiva
Among the many modern models, Daiva coils deservedly occupy an honorable place. Japanese quality and high reliability are their main advantages over other manufacturers.
The most popular carp models equipped with byteraner include:
- Daiwa Regal X BR and Z BR - low-cost power cyprinids with baytranerom. Hold up to 270 m of fishing line.
- Daiwa Black Widow BR is a powerful and reliable model for fishing on large carp. Has 3 steel bearing mechanisms and a backstop. Holds 200-230 m of fishing line.
- Daiwa Tournament Linear is a heavy-duty reel with multi-disc clutch and a spool with an increased winding pitch. It has 4 bearings and can hold up to 400 m of fishing line.
- Daiwa Infinity IF-X BRA - reel designed for catching trophy carp. It has an enlarged spool, an anti-twist roller and a balanced Gyrospin rotor. Can hold up to 450 m of fishing line.
The listed Daiva coils are characterized by excellent ergonomics, have a special coating that protects from the effects of water and dirt, as well as quickly folding handles.
Shimano cyprinids
The Shimano company is also widely known in our market for its products. Its models are no worse than the daiva carp reels, and in some cases even surpass them. And the point here is not so much in quality as in technological features.
The most popular reels of this manufacturer for carp fishing are:
- The Shimano Super Baitrunner 10000 XTR RA is the company's best carp reel with byteraner. It has 8 bearings, an aluminum spool, can hold up to 510 m of fishing line.
- Shimano Baitrunner ST 2500 FA - a high-tech model with the ability to replace the spool. It has only 2 bearings and a friction brake with front placement.
- The Shimano Baitrunner DL 2500 FA is a simple and reliable reel with 4 bearings, a front clutch and the ability to replace the spool.
- Super Baitranner XTE A is a large heavy feeder reel for trophy carp with a spool size of 10000. It has a mass of 600 g and 8 bearings.
What is a snap. Features carp
If you figured out the coils, you can talk about snap on carp. This fish has quite specific habits, so the usual montages here are not always suitable.
Equipment is an element of gear, including a hook, a leash and additional devices located on the fishing line below the sinker.
The difference between carp snap from the rest is that they are all designed for one feature of the carp - do not swallow right away, but suck up the potential food with your lips, thus testing it for safety.
That is why most carp erections are designed for fish care.
The main types of carp snap
- Blind snap. Conventional mounting with fixed load and hook securing. It features a long (up to 40 cm) leash. Great for fishing in still water.
- Sliding tooling. This is an installation in which the sinker is not tightly attached to the fishing line, but has the ability to move freely around it. This option makes it possible to carry out the most distant casting, and also significantly unloads the tackle without straining the carp with its weight.
- Hair snap. It is mainly used for fishing carp using boilies. Its essence lies in the fact that the nozzle is fixed not on the hook, but on the “hair” - a thin fishing line tied to the ear of the hook and located in close proximity to it. When the carp sucks the “safe” bait, the hook will follow it unnoticed. Spitting it out, given that he is naked, is almost impossible.
- Equipment "helicopter". The essence of this installation is that the leash to the main fishing line is not attached vertically, as usual, but horizontally, more precisely, perpendicularly, through a triple swivel. The cargo is suspended at the end of the main line. This installation is ideal for long casting, since it virtually eliminates the twisting of gear.
- Floating snap. Used for fishing in the overgrown or silted bottom. The main feature is the placement of foam balls on the hook forend raising it with the bait above the bottom.
