The Irish air carrier Ryanair is Europe's leading low-cost airline flying to more than 30 countries. In addition, Ryanair prices are officially recognized as one of the lowest among all low cost airlines. For the most part, this is due to additional requirements and restrictions. Therefore, in order to really save money and not to pay extra fees at the airline, you must clearly know the rules for baggage allowance and the allowable baggage allowance at Ryanair.
Baggage rules on Ryanair
Ryanair would not be called a low-cost airline if it did not charge an additional fee for luggage. One passenger can purchase up to two pieces of checked baggage weighing up to 20 kg each, measuring 81 x 119 x 119 cm.
The cost of the fee is constantly changing depending on the season, and if for a flight from Budapest to Milan in the non-tourist season, the cost of the first bag will be about 15 euros, then when flying to the Canary Islands in high season, the amount of the surcharge for the second bag will be already about 150 euros. Baggage must be checked in at least 40 minutes before departure, and payment is best made in advance when buying a ticket or at least until the moment of online check-in: at the airport this service will cost much more. And if, upon arriving at the airport, it suddenly turns out that the size of the suitcase is suitable for Ryanair hand luggage, then the cost of the service fee is easy to return by contacting the representatives of the low-cost airline at the airport.
What baggage can I carry for free?
The ticket price includes the right to carry two pieces of hand luggage for free. The permissible size of a Ryanair carry-on suitcase is 55 x 40 x 20 cm. A duty-free bag or handbag can only be carried into the cabin if its length and height are not more than 35 x 20 x 20 cm. In addition to hand luggage, for Ryanair it is of no small importance and weight: the permissible weight is 10 kg for one item.

At the same time, if the “preponderance” airline can be offered to be divided between people traveling together, the rules of the Irish low-cost airline are prohibited. The list of items that can be additionally taken to the cabin also does not exist: a case with a laptop, flowers, a package from duty free - you will have to choose one and only one that corresponds to the dimensions of your hand luggage indicated by Ryanair. The only exception is for mothers traveling with infants; for the needs of a child under 2 years old, it is additionally allowed (at choice) to carry a car seat or a folding stroller, which must be taken to a special luggage compartment at the gangway.
By the way, each passenger also needs to be prepared for the fact that Ryanair reserves the right to require customers to hand over a large piece of hand luggage to the luggage compartment when boarding the plane. After the flight, the suitcase will be available on the baggage claim tape. Guaranteed to carry large cabin baggage into the Ryanair cabin is only possible for passengers who bought in advance on the airline’s website the Priority Pass right for 10 euros.
How is baggage allowance checked on my Ryanair?
When boarding a large suitcase or bag, airline employees almost always weigh and ask to be placed in a special frame.
This frame immediately allows you to draw conclusions about the conformity of baggage to Ryanair carry-on baggage. If the bag does not fit in, or the edges of the suitcase extend beyond the upper border of the frame, the passenger may be denied boarding altogether or may be required to hand over luggage to the luggage compartment (for this you will have to pay from 30 to 70 euros). In any case, it is better to be prepared for this situation and evaluate the dimensions and weight of hand luggage in one of the Ryanair frames in advance in the registration room.
Rules for transportation of non-standard items
In the cabin of the Ryanair aircraft, for an additional fee, items such as a suit, wedding dress, small musical instruments (such as a violin or guitar), sports or fishing equipment, bicycles, skateboards and other things are allowed.
Ryanair carry-on baggage allowance:
Name | Weight Limit | Collection |
Sport equipment | 20 kg | 50 euro |
Musical instrument | 20 kg | 50 euro |
Folded bike | 30 kg | 50 euro |
The main requirement for goods to be transported is that they must be registered on the owner’s boarding pass (a special service charge must be paid for this), correspond to the allowable size for Ryanair carry-on baggage, be properly secured and packed. That is, it is necessary to have a protective cover for equipment or a guitar, and the bicycle must necessarily be folded in a condition convenient for transportation.
If a person with disabilities needs a wheelchair or crutches, then they are allowed to carry them absolutely free.
The Ryanair baggage rules state that it is permissible to carry as much as possible human dust as part of hand luggage, but only if there are relevant supporting documents (death certificate and cremation certificate).
Ryanair carry-on liquids: how and how much
The rules for transporting liquids (as well as gels, creams and aerosols) in Ryanair hand luggage are similar to the requirements of any other airline. A separate capacity can be no more than 100 ml, and their total volume should not exceed more than 1 liter. It should be borne in mind that even if a few grams of toothpaste are left in a 500 ml tube, this will not convince airport employees, and you will have to part with the “extra” bottle.
All liquids must be packed in a transparent sealed bag and not hidden too deeply - an inspection officer may ask you to present a bag to make sure that the contents are really tightly packed and will not harm other passengers or the cabin of the aircraft.
Prohibited goods
Like any ultra-low-cost airline, Ryanair has a list of positions that cannot be carried on board an aircraft. These restrictions include:
- oxygen - all oxygen cylinders must be delivered to the luggage compartment;
- animals - Ryanair basically has no conditions for transporting animals even in the luggage compartments, an exception is made only for guide dogs accompanying their owners, they are allowed to go directly to the airplane cabin, for this it is only necessary to notify the airline in advance and provide documents confirming the appointment dog and the possibility of his entry into the country of arrival;
- goods - it is impossible to carry anything in the luggage compartment except bags, backpacks and suitcases;
- electric bicycles - therefore it is better to grab a passport for the transported and pre-packaged bicycle, confirming the absence of electrical equipment.
