Short biography of Chikatilo
"Rostov Ripper" was born in the Kharkov region. His relationship with his mother was terrifying, and his father was completely imprisoned. During the war, the boy sat at home most of the time. However, it still did not turn a blind eye to the horrors of war. According to one version, Chikatilo's older brother, Stepan, was eaten by members of his own family. However, this version is not confirmed by anything, and, most likely, is a myth that appeared after terrible events.
By 1954, Andrei Romanovich graduated from high school and was trying to enter the law faculty of Moscow State University. Chikatilo did not go through the competition, and therefore went to study at the Akhtyr Technical School of Communications. Later he began to work on the construction of power lines. In the late fifties, Andrei was drafted into the army, and in 1963 he married.
In 1970, Chikatilo graduated from Rostov University with a degree in Russian Language and Literature. In the same year he received a diploma from the University of Marxism-Leninism. A little earlier he had children - a son and a daughter. For some time he worked as a head teacher at school, but was fired for sexual harassment of students. In 1978, Andrei committed his first murder.
Kill series
The reason for the sentencing of Chikatilo was a series of murders committed by a maniac from 1978 to 1990. The first victim of a cruel maniac was schoolgirl Elena Zakotnova. A nine-year-old girl was raped and killed with particular cruelty.
The crime shocked both local residents and the authorities. Local detectives began active work to capture the villain. Many people fell under suspicion, including the killer himself. However, the detectives did not pronounce Chikatilo's sentence: fate decreed in such a way that a completely different person was blamed. It was Kravchenko - already an experienced criminal who was simply forced to confess to the murder. Under torture, he signed all the papers, and then went to the death penalty.
Upon learning of the sentence of Kravchenko, Chikatilo again embarked on crimes. In more than 10 years, he committed about 53 brutal killings.
"The Case of Fools"
Several victims of the famous maniac immediately became the reason for the launch of a separate criminal proceedings. The check was mainly carried out in relation to persons who were registered with a psychiatrist. So, in the autumn of 1983, the Rostov police detained citizen Shaburov, who suffered from mental retardation. He soon admitted that he and his friend Kalenik stole cars and killed children. Two people were detained. The case against Shaburov and Kalenik received the unofficial name of "the case of fools." The detainees themselves continued to confess to the killings that they did not commit.
During the detention of two insane citizens, the killings did not stop. This began to run into suspicion. Since Shaburov and Kaleniki were greatly confused in the testimonies, they had to be released. The search for the real killer continued. Chikatilo himself still did not receive a sentence.
The first arrest of Chikatilo
In 1984, the peak of activity of the Soviet maniac came. It was at this time that he committed the killing of about 15 people. The total number of victims reached 32 people. In August, Chikatilo entered the post of head of the department for logistics of the energy enterprise of Rostov. This allowed him to travel around the country and commit more and more new crimes.
In September 1984, Andrei Romanovich was detained. Two police officers were surprised by Chikatilo's suspicious behavior. In addition, the maniac was near the Rostov bus station, where around seven dead bodies were discovered nearby. The criminal was monitored. However, Chikatilo's sentence has not yet been passed. Moreover, he was not even responsible.
In 1985, the maniac with his family moved to Novocherkassk. There he got an engineer position at a local factory.
Operation "Forest Belt"
The killings in the forest belts continued. In December, under the control of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the operation "Forest Band" began - a large-scale event held by Soviet law enforcement agencies. 200 thousand people were tested for involvement in a series of murders. Along the way, 1062 crimes were uncovered. Information has accumulated about 48 thousand people with various kinds of sexual deviations. Slightly fewer people were forced to register. The search for the killer cost the state 10 million rubles. According to Deputy Prosecutor Ivan Zemlyanushin, there is no more important case in the country than Lesopolos.
However, it was still far from the verdict of the court. Chikatilo himself was one of the workers in the search squad. Sensing increased supervision, he became more cautious. By this date, the number of his victims reached 34 people.
Psychological portrait of a killer
The portrait, compiled by investigator Bukhanovsky, occupies 85 pages of typewritten text. According to the document, the offender did not suffer from mental disability or psychosis. He did not have special abilities, although he considered himself talented enough. A physically developed and high-growth criminal killed and raped his victims in order to obtain physical satisfaction. He killed his victims with particular cruelty.
Also, the investigation was able to guess that the offender is married and often travels around the country. It also guessed the maniacβs caution: in times of danger, he really stopped killing. However, it was almost impossible for him to stop.
Second Arrest and Court
In 1990, the maniac killed 8 more people. The last murder was committed in a forest belt. After Chikatilo got out on the road, he was stopped by a policeman. Since Andrei Romanovich was not dressed like a mushroom picker, the representative of the law came up with some suspicions regarding the identity of the detainee. However, he still released the maniac, since there was simply no reason for his detention. The famous criminal was arrested only after viewing reports.
The maniac was interrogated for ten days, but he never admitted to anything. There was no direct evidence, and the period of detention in the form of three days had long expired. Then the investigator turned to the psychiatrist Bukhanovsky. Chikatilo burst into tears and began to testify.
Chikatilo's death sentence
The trial of the maniac began in April 1992. He passed in the Rostov house of justice. The volume of materials in the case was 220 volumes. Chikatilo managed to abandon his testimony, but this had no effect. Law enforcement officials were afraid of lynching from relatives of the victims, and therefore placed the offender in a large iron cage. The maniac himself behaved inappropriately, trying to portray a madman. However, the examination showed his full sanity.
The date of Chikatilo's sentence was October 15, 1992. Multi-page volumes of the case were read for more than one day. People have been waiting for a long time. They wanted to know what sentence Chikatilo would pass. According to some statements, the word "execution" caused applause in the hall.
