Recently, private virtual networks and VPN technologies used to create and operate them have become so firmly entrenched in our lives that it is simply impossible to imagine the computer world today without using them. In principle, setting up a VPN connection in Windows 10 is not particularly difficult, but few people know that you can perform such actions in several ways, which are further proposed in full.
VPN: what is it and why is it necessary?
And it’s worth starting with a description of the VPN technology itself, which is used to create networks and connections of this type. What it is?
It is based on the principle of tunneling - a method that allows you to completely encrypt outgoing and incoming traffic, as well as bypassing all kinds of regional blocking from some Internet resources. In a sense, a VPN works in much the same way as anonymous proxy servers, allowing you to change the external IP address of a user computer terminal or mobile device to one for which there are no restrictions or restrictions (for example, access to Russian news resources or services from Ukraine).
Configuring VPN in Windows 10 using the classic method
As for creating a VPN connection in the newest operating systems from Microsoft, two methods can be proposed. And the first is familiar to many by previous OS.
Setting up a VPN in Windows 10 using this method involves the use of the classic “Control Panel” (and not the settings section), where the “Network and Sharing Center” is selected.
Here you choose to create a new connection to the workplace based on the existing connection, after which you enter the name of the connection, server address on the Internet and user login with a password, which can be obtained from the provider. Everything is simple here. A complete analogy with Windows 7.
Configuring a VPN connection in Windows 10 using special system tools
But as you know, in the tenth version of the system is not one "Control Panel", but two. The second is the options menu. And it can be used to create a VPN-based connection.
VPN setup in Windows 10 in this case begins with entering the settings menu with the choice of the network and Internet sections. On the left side there is a special menu in which there is also a VPN.
When entering this section, the creation of a new connection is used, after which a small form is filled in with the correct data provided by the provider. As a type of VPN, PPTP is usually set. After filling out the form, the changes are saved and the transition to additional VPN settings is carried out.
At this stage, setting up a VPN in Windows 10 involves using the properties of the created connection with the subsequent selection of IPv4 protocol parameters (it is unlikely that the protocol of the sixth version will be involved). As usual, automatic reception of addresses is set (this, by the way, is an axiom for all wireless connections).
But there is one caveat. In order for the connection to work, you need to go to additional parameters and uncheck the line for using the main gateway in the remote network on the IP settings tab. Further, the changes are saved, and the icon of the created connection will immediately appear in the system tray.
VPN Server Installation Considerations
Now a few words about setting up a VPN server in Windows 10. As you might expect, nothing has changed since Windows 7.
First you need to enter the network connections section (in the classic “Control Panel”) and select the item for creating a new incoming connection from the file menu, check the boxes for users who will be allowed access. Internet is specified as a connection method, network protocols are installed (IPv6 can be excluded from the list) and the access permission button is pressed. After that, the connection list is updated, where the corresponding icon appears.
Note: in some cases, to bypass locks from the firewall, it may be necessary to add port 1723 to the list of exceptions using the technique of creating a new rule. Sometimes it may be necessary to open this port on the router, but such situations are extremely rare, so there is no point in dwelling on this issue.
Connection setup for mobile operators
Finally, let's see how such a VPN setup is done in Windows 10. We take Beeline as an example.
In principle, the whole technique is completely identical to the classical method described above, only l2tp.internet.beeline.ru is entered in the server address field (storing data is optional). For other operators, server data obtained directly from the support service is used.
Next, the nuances begin. The first step is to enter the properties of the created connection and select the security tab. The most important thing is to install the L2TP protocol with IPSec in the VPN type field, the rest of the parameters can be left unchanged.
Brief Summary
As you can already understand, setting up a VPN in Windows 10 using different methods and for different needs is not particularly difficult. What connection, what server are created in a few minutes. As for the choice of method, it seems that the new tools of the system look more preferable than the classical scheme. Only the shutdown of the gateway must not be forgotten.
However, the standard methods used in systems of rank lower can also be used. At the very least, they are best for building a server. And how many users will not like the new toolkit? And so everything is familiar. If you don’t know the classic “Control Panel”, you can call the fastest method through the “Run” menu with the control command.
