Our article is dedicated to such an institution as the Academic Maly Theater. In our country, two temples of art bear this name. One of them is located in Moscow, and the other in St. Petersburg. Both theaters are among the most famous, popular and successful in Russia.
History of the Moscow Maly Theater
The State Academic Maly Theater was opened in the mid-18th century by decree of Empress Elizabeth. It was opened at the university. Students took part in the performances. At the university, a public theater was created. It did not exist for too long, but it was he who formed the basis of the first permanent troupe of Moscow.
Initially, the theater was private and owned by entrepreneurs. At the beginning of the 19th century, he switched over to the treasury account and became Imperial. In addition to the dramatic actors, the troupe at that time included singers, dancers and musicians. The repertoire included performances of various genres. It showed not only dramatic performances, but also ballets with operas.
The Maly Theater replaced several rooms and acquired its permanent home, in which it still lives, in 1824.
Initially, the word "Small" in the title was not a proper name and was not written with a capital letter. It meant only the size of the building. In the same way as the Bolshoi Theater was called such because of the area of the room that it occupies. Today the word "Small" is a proper name, it is written with a capital letter and is not translated into other languages.
The artistic director of the theater for many years is the famous actor Yuri Solomin. The troupe, which has more than a hundred artists, serves a huge number of famous lyceum artists.
Each season, the theater pleases its viewers with several new productions.

The hero does not know whom to make the heir to his huge fortune. Before him is a choice - a poor and lazy nephew or a young beautiful wife. Which of them is more worthy of getting the wealthy’s capital? A relative of the merchant is a man greedy for money. The wife is modest, honest, does not accept courtship of extraneous men. But relatives are trying in every possible way to ensure that the merchant doubts the loyalty and purity of his young wife. In whose favor does the merchant decide to make a will?
The play was written a long time ago, but does not lose its relevance to this day.
About the Maly Theater of St. Petersburg
The Maly Academic Theater (St. Petersburg) opened its doors to spectators in the harsh wartime. His year of birth is 1944. The troupe was very small, it did not have its own premises. Artists showed performances in small towns and villages of the region. In Leningrad, the actors did not perform.
After 30 years of the theater’s existence, E. Padfe, a student of G. Tovstonogov, became the main director in it. He invited young talented actors and directors to the troupe. It was he who attracted the collaboration of the current artistic director - L. Dodin. Then the theater began to gain fame.
Today, Maly is one of the recognized leaders in our country. He is known for his productions around the world. The troupe has already traveled to almost all European countries. The performances of the Maly Theater are awarded prizes not only at home. They received awards in France, Italy, Great Britain.
Almost every year, starting in 1998, Maly became the winner of the Golden Mask in various nominations.
In 1997, a branch of Maly opened in the city of Kirishi.
In the title of the MDT there is a subscript - "Theater of Europe". The troupe received this status in 1998 by the decision of the Assembly. There are only three theaters in the world with a similar name. One of them is our Small Drama. In addition to him, the three include the famous: the Milanese Piccolo and the Parisian Odeon. The assignment of such status to MDT happened because he went on tour in almost all corners of the planet. Almost none of the most prestigious and famous theater festival is complete without MDT.
The Maly Theater actively collaborates with young directors from other countries.
Lev Abramovich is also a teacher. His graduates are the backbone of the troupe.
In addition to rehearsals and performances in the theater for actors, classes in vocal, movement and stage speech are held. Not only novice artists are required to attend classes, but also already recognized stage masters.
In 1999, the MDT appeared a second building with a chamber stage. Its hall is very small and is designed for only 50 spectators. The chamber scene acts as an experimental laboratory. Here young directors and actors practice and try their creative powers.
