The cargo and passenger "Sable" is a compact van that is produced on the conveyors of the Gorky Automobile Plant. Unlike "Gazelles", this modification has less weight, length and load rating. History of creation
Mass production of the cargo and passenger Sable started in 1998. At that time, various modifications of the "Gazelle" already tightly conquered the corresponding market segment. When developing new items, designers used foreign and domestic experience. They decided to place the car on a standard base, taking into account some of the solutions that are implemented in the designs of the Ford Transit and UAZ 3727. As a result, the car received a semi-hood layout with shortened side members and a wheelbase.
Since the production of the vans in question began later than the Gazelles, the engineers managed to avoid a number of characteristic shortcomings. Significant restyling modifications were carried out only in 2003. To make the vehicle more modern, rectangular headlights were replaced with block teardrop-shaped analogues, and the “plumage” received a different design design. The dashboard has also undergone significant changes. In 2006, full-fledged serial production of modified cars under the name Sobol-Standard began.
Modifications
The cars in question were produced in several variations. Among them:
- Versions with front or all-wheel drive.
- With diesel or gasoline engine.
- Triple model for cargo transportation (transported weight - 0.77 tons). Length / width / height - 2.46 / 1.83 / 1.53 meters.
- Cargo and passenger "Sable" for seven seats. The car is equipped with a cargo compartment of 3.7 cubic meters, the passenger part is separated by a partition.
Device
The basis of this car is a frame chassis. In the front part, a double-lever suspension of an independent configuration is mounted. It is equipped with springs, transverse stabilizers, shock absorbers. The rear analogue is made dependent on springs, equipped with a pair of longitudinal semi-elliptical elements and a double hydraulic shock absorber.
The passenger and freight GAZ Sobol, unlike the Gazelles, has the distinctive features of the drive axle:
- hubs with a lower strength parameter;
- extended axles;
- narrowed brake drums;
- single-wheel wheels.
A hydraulic brake unit with two circuits is mounted on the vehicle. Also in the system there is a vacuum booster and a brake fluid level indicator. As standard, the machine is equipped with front disc brakes, rear drum counterpart, halogen light elements, 16-inch discs.
Power units
The engine of the Sobol passenger-and-freight vehicle aggregates with a five-mode manual gearbox connected via a standard dry clutch with hydraulics. Models with all-wheel drive have a lockable differential between the axles and a two-speed “razdatka” with a reduction gear.
Until 2006, the modifications were equipped with motors typical of the Gazelles:
- The ZMZ-402 gasoline unit, with a volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 100 "horses".
- Carburetor analogue with 16 valves (ZMZ-406.3): 2.3 l, 110 hp
- 2.3-liter injection engine ZMZ-406, 145 horse power.
- A limited batch with GAZ-560 engines and a turbine diesel engine, which have never been widely used.

- 2003 - ZMZ-405-22-10, injection modification, corresponding to the Euro-2 category, with a working volume of 2.5 liters, and a power parameter of 152 horsepower.

The cargo and passenger compartment "Sable" 4x4 is made in a non-standard style for the domestic market. The advantage of the cab of this vehicle is an efficient heating system. The driver's seat is equipped with a minimum number of adjustments, depreciation is minimal. According to the responses of the owners, the cargo-passenger version of the Sable has several significant drawbacks:
- high noise when driving from the steps, motor shield, steering shaft, dashboard and transmission unit linings;
- cool internal climate during severe frosts, especially in the back row of seats;
- the working reserve without serious breakdowns is 150-200 thousand kilometers.
To solve these problems, users mount additional noise and thermal insulation, install individual heaters, more often conduct inspection in terms of the state of the elements of the chassis and engine.
