Undoubtedly, Microsoft Excel is the ideal tool for working with tables, but Word also has tools for creating and editing them. If you prefer “Word” in terms of working with tables, then you should find out all the features of a text editor so that working with them is more productive.
In this article we will talk about how to make a table break in Word, by the way, there are plenty of ways to accomplish this, but here four main ones will be sorted.
Method One: Easy Break
Before telling you how to make a table break, it is worth mentioning that the instruction will be executed on the example of the 2016 program, but it is perfect for earlier versions as well. Perhaps the icons of some tools and their location will differ, but the main idea will remain the same.
We proceed directly to how to break the table in the program. For this you need:
- Select the first line. This is done simply: it is necessary, holding the left mouse button (LMB), to stretch the cursor over all cells of the row.
- Now we need to go to the tab "Layout". It is located in the group of tabs "Working with tables".
- There you should click on the "Split Table" button, which is located in the "Join" tool group.
After all the actions done, you can observe the break of the table, which means that everything is done correctly. This was only the first of four methods, so without wasting time, we move on.
Method Two: How to Do It in Word 2003
Unfortunately, if you use the 2003 program to work with text and tables, then the previous instruction will not work for you. But now we will describe in detail how to make a table break in this version.
Everything is simple here. Initially, you need to select the first line of the future table in the same way, and then click on the line “Break page” in the “Table” tab. After that, it will break.
Method Three: Hot Keys
If you do not want to choose your own method for each version of the software, how to break the table, then a universal method will be presented specifically for you.
To split a table using hotkeys, you need to:
- As in previous cases, the first row of the future table should be highlighted.
- Press CTRL + ENTER.
That's all. As you can see, this method is much faster than the previous ones, and most importantly, it fits all versions of the program. But someone may note that after the manipulations done, the second table moved to another page. If you wanted this result, then leave everything as it is, if not, just place the cursor immediately after the first page and press the BACKSPACE key, after that the tables will be located on one sheet with an indent in one paragraph.
Method Four: Page Break
In addition to the previous one, there is another universal method. Now we’ll talk about him.
To make two from one table using page breaks, you need to do the following:
- Place the mouse in the line that will be the first in the second table. Please note that you do not need to select a line.
- Click the "Insert" tab.
- In the "Pages" tool group, click on the "Page break" icon.
After everything done, the table will be divided. However, in this case, it will fit irrevocably on the new sheet, that is, you cannot place both halves on one sheet.
Join tables back
If you are thinking how to join the table after the break, then you need to do the following:
- Fully select the second part.
- Press CTRL + X.
- Place the cursor immediately after the first part.
- Press CTRL + V.
In this way, tables can be merged into one. Of course, there are several algorithms for combining them, but this is the most common.
