VAZ-2109 replacement of the rear pillars: the rules and the process of replacement

On a VAZ-2109 car, the replacement of the rear pillars is necessary in case of excessive wear or damage. If we compare the suspension of the "nine" with the "classic", then it is more perfect, the efficiency is higher, and the design is a bit simpler. Although there are still common features, there are springs and shock absorbers in the design.

Only on the "nines" they are assembled into a single unit, and on the "classics" are independently installed. Repair and maintenance of the suspension on a VAZ-2109 car can be done independently, you only need to know the general design of the car and be able to use the tool.

Rear suspension design

The basis of the whole structure is an amortization strut that dampens body vibrations when driving on uneven surfaces. The VAZ-2109 rear struts are being replaced without dismantling other car suspension components. The rear suspension strut consists of:

• shock absorber;
• metal plates under the spring;
• springs;
• rubber pads;
• fasteners - nuts and bolts.

What tool is needed to replace the racks?

1. Loosen the wheel bolts on the side on which the repair is carried out.
2. Raise the rear of the vehicle on the jack.
3. Remove the wheel completely.
4. Install a support under the body and lower the vehicle onto it.
5. Check how well the spring is compressed with a puller.
6. Open the trunk, remove the rubber plug covering the shock absorber rod mounting location.
7. Unscrew the nut from the rod with a long pipe wrench 17 or with a special tool.
8. Unscrew lower suspension strut mount.
9. Pull out the entire strut assembly.

To repair or change?

Some motorists are faced with the quite reasonable question - why not try to independently restore the old racks, because the cost of new ones is quite high? 1. If the resource of the old racks is already decent, then there may be a strong yield on the stock, because of which it is sometimes impossible to achieve perfect sealing.

Assembly of a back rack "nine"

And now a few words about how the correct replacement of the rear racks of the VAZ-2109 is made. Many motorists change only the shock absorber and pillows, do not attach much importance to the springs. And it is worth paying attention to them. As they wear, they sag, and the length of all turns becomes less than necessary. As a result, the entire suspension will not work properly.

1. Install the compressed spring on the stand.
2. Fix rubber pillows on the last coil of a spring with an insulating tape.
3. Carefully, trying not to shift the spring relative to the shock absorber, install the rack in place.
4. Loosen the nut on top of the shock absorber rod.
5. Install the bottom of the rack to the beam. Secure with a bolt.

Tighten all threaded connections after assembly is complete and remove the puller from the spring. After that, you can install the wheel in place and start repairing the second side - it is done exactly the same. After repair, it is advisable to final tighten the nuts after installing the car on wheels. And after 20-30 kilometers of run, check the tightness of all joints - sometimes the nuts are twisted after driving. Try to use nuts with plastic retainers on the thread.
