The Benefis Theater in Moscow appeared at the end of the 20th century. Initially, it was an experimental studio. The repertoire of the theater is small, but it includes performances designed for different age categories, classical and modern plays.

The Benefis Theater opened its doors in 1986. Organized by Anna Nerovnaya. She is the artistic director of Benefis today. Initially, it was an experimental theater studio. There were a lot of such created then. The initiative for such experiments came from the Moscow government. In 1991, the studio received the status of the State Drama Theater. The troupe was allocated a room near the Novye Cheryomushki metro station. The building is a classic building from the time of Khrushchov. The troupe occupies this building to this day.

From the very beginning of its career, the Benefis Theater in Cheryomushki started the tradition of inviting famous artists from other troupes to participate in their productions. At different times, the performances were attended by: Anna Kamenkova, Evgeny Knyazev, Elena Ivochkina, Alexander Simonets, Sergey Kolesnikov, etc.

The stage in the theater is small, the hall is small, which contributes to a greater involvement of the viewer in the action.

The repertoire of "Benefis" includes performances of different genres: tragicomedy, satirical fantasies, parables, psychological dramas, musical comedies, detective stories.

The Moscow theater "Benefis" has a namesake in the city of Yelets, Lipetsk region. It was founded by Vladimir Nikolaevich Nazarov. Yelets is the homeland of Mikhail Prishvin, Ivan Bunin and Tikhon Khrennikov.

The theatrical traditions of the city are rooted in the first half of the 19th century. Already then there was a professional troupe. In total, there were four theaters in Yelets. They all closed at different times. The last of them - in 1948.

The Benefis Theater was opened in 1993. It is located in a building that was built back in 1911. Previously, it housed the city theater, which closed in 1948.

The troupe actively takes part in various festivals for small cities of Russia. Often for their performances, artists and directors received diplomas and awards.

The Benefis Theater (Yelets) is also the organizer of the festival. It was held in 2010 under the name "The smallest and most unknown festival." It was led by Yuri Alshits. The festival was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. It was attended by directors and artists from around the world: Russia, Greece, Italy, Poland, France, Norway, Argentina, England, Sweden, Cyprus, Switzerland, etc.
