On the Internet, a certain Uncheckit program has been running freely for a long time. What kind of application this is, far from all users know and fall for it. As the developers themselves write, the application is a very useful utility, which is absolutely necessary for any Internet surfer. But is it?
Uncheckit program: what is it?
The application itself, as it turned out, hails from China, from where too many threats have come recently. And no exception - the Uncheckit application. What kind of program is this in a general sense? Yes, this is a real browser hijacker virus.
The application penetrates the computer when installing some programs downloaded from unreliable sources, and is installed as an affiliate utility, supposedly helping to avoid installing unnecessary application components in standard mode (in advanced mode, the user can uncheck unnecessary components). And the Uncheckit app seems to do all this for him. But after activating the program, problems begin.
Damage to the user
The first symptom is a change in the home page in the browser and an extremely difficult search, a huge amount of advertising and redirecting to obscure sites.
Okay, just that. But the virus is able to install a huge number of other programs in the background , add extensions to browsers, transfer personal user data to the servers of the virus developers, and also embed its own banners and various kinds of drop-down menus in pop-up browsers.
Uncheckit: how to remove an application? Process completion
Now let's look at issues related to getting rid of this insidious threat. How to remove Uncheckit from a computer? First, you should call the standard "Task Manager" and stop all processes associated with the virus.
As a rule, there may be several of them working simultaneously. To date, four modifications are known:
- Uncheckit.exe;
- UncheckitInst.exe;
- UncheckitSvc.exe;
- UncheckitBsn.exe.
If one or more of these processes are in an active state, you should force the completion of their work by pressing the appropriate button.
In addition, it is advisable to exclude the program from the startup list, if it is there. You can do this from here, or use the msconfig command to access the section. If this is not done, when the system is restarted, the virus can be activated again and all actions to remove it will become meaningless.
Standard uninstall
Now we directly proceed to the question of how to remove the Uncheckit program . For starters, you can use the standard method. In the "Control Panel" you need to select the program and component section.
The application itself is displayed in the list of installed applications and does not hide anywhere. In this case, just use the delete procedure. But that is far from all that needs to be done.
Manual Deletion of Residual Files
Now a few more words about the Uncheckit app. What it is is already clear, but the trouble is that the built-in Windows uninstaller in some cases cannot completely remove the virus . Therefore, you will have to do this manually.
We call the standard "Explorer" or any other file manager and in the search bar we set the condition with the program name (Uncheckit). Typically, the files will be located in the system partition (drive C). We delete all found elements (preferably from the "Recycle Bin" too).
Search registry keys
So, the main content is deleted. Now we check the registry according to the Uncheckit criterion. What will this give the user? And the fact that in this way you can get rid of the remaining keys, which in some cases can activate the virus again.
We call the editor with the regedit command in the Run console, and then use either the corresponding command from the file menu or the combination Ctrl + F to search, where we enter the name of the program in the search field, as was shown in the previous situation. Again, we delete all the keys found.
Uninstall extensions in browsers
Finally, you need to enter the settings of extensions (add-ons) in the default browser and delete the corresponding add-ons, and then change the home page.
Otherwise, it is possible that when the browser starts, the user will again be taken to the same resource from where the program was installed. This means that re-entry of the virus into the system can not be avoided.
Anti-virus and anti-spyware scan
That seems to be all. However, half measures cannot be limited. To be sure that the program has been completely removed, as they say, you should check the system with at least a standard antivirus, and itβs better to download a special highly targeted utility like AdwCleaner and check with it.
Perhaps testing the system for the presence of adware and malware will not work. It's good. But in the end, itβs better to put the system in order by checking it with CCleaner, which will help get rid of unnecessary shortcuts.
A few words in the end
In general, if you give advice on how to prevent the penetration of such threats on your computer, it is worth noting that even when installing programs it is better to see what the user mode offers and to uncheck it yourself. In addition, the downloaded distribution kit or archive with the installer should initially be checked for viruses using a standard scanner. After all, visiting sites of dubious content is not recommended. Any antivirus operating in real-time protection mode generates such warnings, and they should not be ignored in any case.
