How to restore laptop battery?

Unfortunately, after a certain period of time (from a year to five, depending on operating conditions), the battery of any laptop begins to catastrophically lose capacity. As a result, you can’t even dream about any hours of work: if you manage to read the text within half an hour, then this is already good. It would seem that a laptop battery recovery program is not needed. After all, what prevents you from using the obvious solution that lies on the surface - to replace the battery? The answer is simple, just like the question itself: the high cost of an energy source for a laptop interferes. The user who managed to find a new battery for his model at a price less than a third of the entire portable computer can be considered lucky. The result is predictable: if a laptop is used only at home as a replacement for a personal computer, then they work with it only from the network “until better times” (usually to obsolescence), but if mobility is needed, you have to spend a lot of money.

However, there is another solution - this is a laptop battery recovery. Service centers can not be considered, since this, again, is a cost, and no one will give a guarantee for a used battery. However, this is understandable. Therefore, everyone can try to restore the laptop battery . Argument: the battery will either work or not, and it is impossible to use it without restoration or replacement. As they say, there is nothing to lose.

Restoring a laptop battery begins with the preparation of tools. You will need: a multimeter (the cost of budget models dropped to $ 4), a sharp knife, a bulb with a power of 21 W and a voltage of 12 V (automobile), a low-power soldering iron, and also super glue.

We remove the battery from the laptop. Its body does not provide for dismantling, so you will have to carefully walk with a knife along the seam connecting the two halves. If you can’t immediately open it, then we call patience for help and try again.

After “opening” inside, you can see a block of small battery cells connected in series (did you think that the battery is solid?).

Further restoration of the laptop battery is to determine the type of elements. This can be nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium-ion (Li-Ion) technology. Further actions are different. Consider the procedure for NiMH.

It happens that the laptop does not turn on at all from the battery. The problem may be in the charge controller. To find out the reason, consider the number of battery cells in the battery pack and multiply by 1.2 - this allows you to determine the voltage level. We solder a 21 W bulb to the terminals (+ and -) of the battery pack and use a multimeter switched to the voltage measurement mode of at least 20 V, check the value at the terminals. The bulb provides the load, voltage drop, direct measurement will not give results. If the obtained value is approximately equal to the calculated value, then the battery problem is in the controller malfunction. If significantly lower, then you should disconnect the chain of battery cells and check the voltage on each individually. Excessively low batteries should be replaced (commercially available 2100 mA batteries are usually suitable). Before assembling the chain, all components are reduced to a single value of the residual charge (light load for each).

Then, in accordance with the polarity, the bulb and the power source are connected to the terminals of the battery pack in parallel (the power supply itself is suitable). This is necessary to raise the voltage level to 1.1 V, otherwise the controller will “reject” the battery. Using superglue, we assemble the case.

Now you need a program for the laptop battery. Its job is to calibrate - the controller determines the minimum and maximum capacitance values, as well as the output of batteries to the nominal level. For example, Imtec Battery Mark.
