Today, the annotation is firmly established in scientific practice. Why did this happen? The reason is that the information revolution has made accessible really vast layers of scientific articles. At the same time, a researcher is most often interested in only a certain volumetric and thematic section of the proposed one. Its selection initially becomes a rather laborious occupation.
How to simplify this process? The annotation to the article will help in this - an approximate compressed description of it. On average, it consists of five sentences. It has fundamental differences from the summary.
Annotation structure
Compliance with a certain structure is regulated by the annotation to the article. The example should contain the required details: place of publication of the article, name (title) of the publisher, in which year the article was published, as well as who the author is and what is the full name of the article. It also indicates the actual topic of the article, which determines its orientation, the main provisions (thesis). The original article itself may contain an annotation.
How is the abstract different from the summary?
Conciseness and conciseness - its features, this is a kind of presentation that does not include common phrases, well-known facts and commonplace thoughts. It is indicated separately for which category of readers it is intended. Brief coverage by the author of a scientific problem provides an abstract to the article. Examples (citations in mind) should not appear in the abstract. However, it is not just a narrative: the reader is presented in abbreviated form its result - the author’s conclusions. The presentation style excludes the subjective thoughts of the author, presented by him in the first person. It should also be emphasized official, using an indefinite-personal form of the verb, for example, “analyzed”, “researched”, “realized”.
Why write an annotation of an article?
The requirements of scientific journals suggest that, after the main text, an annotation to the article be written (examples of this can be seen in numerous works). Using the magazine editor, it will greatly facilitate the task of publishing an article. In addition, the abstract will be included in the extended content of the scientific journal.
A simple way to pre-check
A compulsory requirement of a scientific journal is the digestibility of a brief description of the article. Many authors tend to complicate it. Is the abstract for a scientific article written in the optimal style? An example (the simplest) of verifying compliance is a technique using a Russian-English and an English-Russian translator. First, the abstract written in Russian is translated into English, then the resulting text is translated back into Russian. Ideally, the resulting secondary Russian text should also be readable.
Output
Summing up, let us recall what degree of compression an abstract on a scientific article should have. An example may include five sentences. The first includes information about the author, title, topic, place and time of publication of the article. The second or third is an extremely short list of its main provisions. Fourth and fifth - the author's conclusions on a scientific article. However, brevity is relative: the abstract should not be less than 500 typed characters.
