Analysis of the poem "Dagger" Lermontov M.Yu.

All admirers of the poet’s work know how Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov was kind to the Caucasus. “Dagger” is one of the poems dedicated to the Caucasian peoples and expressing his love for this beautiful land. The work was written at the end of 1837 under the name “Gift”, in 1838 the author changed the text a little and renamed it “Dagger”. The beginning of the poem echoes the Pushkin work of the same name, written in 1821. Perhaps Mikhail Yuryevich in some way copied his idol, but his work has an extended content.

An analysis of Lermontov’s “Dagger” poem shows that the author not in vain uses the symbol of the struggle against tyranny in his work, but here he also implies a symbol of high nobility, firmness of soul, fidelity to duty. From the original title of the verse, it becomes clear that Mikhail Yuryevich received the weapon as a gift from a woman. Many writers came to the grave of Alexander Griboedov and stayed with his widow, Mikhail Yuryevich was no exception. For him, Nina Griboedova was an ideal of beauty, warmth, loyalty and good nature. During their meeting, the woman presented Lermontov and Odoevsky with a dagger as a sign of friendship, fidelity and honor, since she considered them friends in the lyre.

The work itself is riddled with incomprehensible sadness. An analysis of Lermontov’s “Dagger” poem requires more information about the fate of the donor herself, then it will become clear whose “bright tear” flowed from the blade, and why it was the “pearl of suffering”, about whose black eyes “filled with mysterious sadness and dumb love”, says the poet. This woman carried all her life into her heart a love for a single man, she did not cry and did not complain about fate, only a few knew how hard it was for her to live without her lover.

In a sign of devotion and love, Nina erected a monument to Griboedov on Mount Mtatsminda, a bronze-poured figure of a kneeling and sobbing woman - this is herself. It was here that public figures and writers gathered from all over Russia to honor the memory of the great writer. An analysis of Lermontov’s “Dagger” poem makes it possible to understand how much the author admired the strength of character, spirit, fidelity of her husband’s memory and Nina’s high human qualities.
