To date, the creation of a local network through a router has become so possible that even a novice can handle it. All you need for this is a computer, Internet access, and the router itself. Regardless of its model, the process of creating and configuring a local network is the same.
WINDOWS XP
Setting up a local network through a router on Windows XP starts with disabling security programs on the home computer. If you have installed a brandmauer or other network security programs , you should temporarily disable them so that there is no blocking of local network traffic.
To configure a local network through a router, and two or more computers could recognize each other and gain open access, you need to place them in the same workgroup, under any name. How to do it? Follow the directions:
- Select the “properties” tab by clicking the (right) mouse button on the “My Computer” icon;
- We proceed further to the tab "computer name", then you should click the button under the name "change";
- Enter the required name in the field of the working group and click “OK”.
Next, go to the ip-addresses. To configure a local network through a router, the IP addresses of all working computers must be on the same subnet. It should be noted that by default all PCs receive the following settings from the router:
- IP address
- Main gateway ;
- Subnet mask
- DNS - server with addresses.
There are times when setting up a local network through a router is not possible without turning on NetBios. To overcome this obstacle, you should go to the "Network Connections" through the control panel and call the TCP / IP settings window. NetBios is enabled in the advanced settings, on the "general" tab. This completes the setup.
WINDOWS 7
Creating a local network through a router on Windows 7 has significant differences, so you should write about the configuration separately. First, find out the name of the computer. To do this, go to the "properties" section, where we need to find the "change settings" tab. Next, after changing the name of the machine and the name of its working group, you need to reboot so that the changes become active and take effect. Attention! The PC name must be indicated in Latin letters, otherwise setting up a local network through a router may contain irreparable errors. Then we configure automatic receipt of the address and DNS:
- Select "Control Panel";
- Sharing Center
- Local Area Network> Properties;
- Select TCP / IPv4 and check the box to get the IP address automatically.
In order for the completed LAN setup through the router to be completed successfully, you need to enable NetBios. To do this, go to another section called the properties of the Internet protocol, select "Advanced" and in the "WINS" tab put the necessary checkmark "Enable NetBios". Click OK. At this stage of your actions, the configuration of the local network through the router is considered completed. Restart your computer and enjoy the benefits.
It is worth noting that if you have TP-Link or Belkin routers, then you can configure your computer in two ways, depending on the type of connection. If you connect the equipment using wi-fi, then the first thing to do is to set the necessary properties of the wireless connection. If you connect the router using a network card and a blue cable (patch cord), then you should set the properties of the local network to automatically obtain IP addresses.
As for the login and password settings for accessing the router itself, then, regardless of the selected model, the settings are in the standard form. To do this, in the browser window, enter the address indicated on the back cover of the equipment (for example, http://192.167.0.1/) and then enter the desired settings.
Now you can safely proceed and independently cope with the task. Success in the correct execution is guaranteed to you!
