Line spacing in Word: how to do?

Often, in order to beautifully format the text, you have to resort to formatting. Types of formatting may include the choice of fonts, their sizes, the presence of indentation and alignment in the document. In addition, the presence of line spacing refers to formatting. What does this interval represent?

Line spacing

Line spacing in Word and any other document is the distance between the lines of one or different paragraphs. This distance can reach almost any value, the only refinement here will be that it will not work to make this interval less than a given minimum, namely 12 pt. This is due to the fact that a shorter interval will not allow the contents of the document to be displayed correctly. The maximum interval is not limited by anything, except for considerations of readability and accuracy of the text.

How to spacing lines

Let's take a closer look at how to make line spacing. To do this, we need to select the text that will undergo formatting. Then, in the "Home" tab of the "Word" document, click on the "Interval" button. It consists of two blue arrows pointing up and down, to the right of which there are lines indicating lines. When you click on this button, a menu will pop up where you can select the desired line spacing option from the ones presented or set your own option.

Select Interval

Basic interval options

When you click on the "Interval" button in a pop-up window a choice of 6 line spacing options will appear, they are considered to be the main ones:

  • 1.0;
  • 1.15;
  • 1.5;
  • 2.0;
  • 2.5;
  • 3.0.

These numbers indicate the factor by which the value of the minimum interval will be multiplied.

Other interval options

When choosing an interval, you can use any of the above options, or you can use another, manually configured. To set the interval we need, which is not in the pop-up window, after selecting the formatted text, click on the line "Other line spacing ...

String "other variants of integrals"

In the pop-up window, you need to find the "Interval" block, where you can choose the formatting method and set the required distance between the lines.

Select an interval from the menu

There are also six available formatting options:

  1. Single - depends on the largest font in the line.
  2. 1,5 lines - the standard size, which is used very often.
  3. Double - the interval is two times the single.
  4. Minimum is the smallest size that is necessary for everything to display normally. The default is 12 points, but can be manually increased.
  5. Exactly - a way to accurately write line spacing in points.
  6. Multiplier - allows you to increase a single interval by the required number of times, also set manually.

Other ways to space

It can also be noted that you can set the line spacing in another way, it is not necessary to perform many actions: open the "Home" tab (after all, you can have another open) and look for the "Interval" button. "Word" at times facilitates this task. To set the line spacing, you can select the desired text and right-click on it. In the window, we will have options for what we can do with the text. We search for the paragraph "Paragraph" and click on it.

GOST Interval

Text documents are used everywhere: in work when concluding contracts and instructions, in studies when writing diploma and term papers, and so on. In order for the texts to be easily read, GOST was created in accordance with which documentation should be compiled. Among other items, such as font and indentation, GOST also mentions the interval. So, according to the state standard, documents should use one and a half line spacing, which is important to remember when creating important documentation.
