ISO is a special format in which files for emulation on virtual drives are converted. You can mount a similar image without third-party drives, or burn it to a USB flash drive / disk and use it on other computers. In most cases, ISO files are used to create bootable drives with a distribution of the Windows operating system. Let's figure out how to make an ISO image, how to write it to external media, etc.
All ways
The standard situation is that you need to write files to a disk or a USB flash drive in the image format in order to use the device as a boot drive in the future. This can come in handy when installing the operating system, when using emergency programs that do not require the working state of Windows, so you can run them directly from a USB flash drive before loading the OS.
First, the user must find and download the necessary files before making an ISO image. In the case of the operating system, the distributions are already packaged in this format, so you do not have to do anything manually - just write data to the drive through a special program (more on that below).
It is necessary to create an ISO file using the functionality of special utilities. Most often, with their help, a set of actions is performed - both the creation of images and their recording on a USB flash drive / disk. Consider the option using the UltraISO program.
Ultraiso
You can download this program for free from the developers site. After installation, launch the application and follow these steps:
- Using the explorer at the bottom of the window, select the necessary files. They will appear at the base of the area - the contents of the future image are displayed there.
- Now click on the "File" - "Save As" button.
- Enter a name for the future ISO file, select the directory to save and click "Save."
You can also make an ISO image by copying data from a physical medium:
- Click on the "Self-loading" button and select "Create Hard Disk Image" from the menu.
- Specify the path to the drive where the disk is located, and click OK.
- Wait for the program to copy the data to ISO format, and save it to the desired folder on your hard drive.
How to make an ISO image of Windows?
In the case of the operating system, you do not have to manually create an ISO file. You can download a ready-made distribution kit for writing to a USB flash drive. The most diverse editions and assemblies are located on large torrent trackers. However, if you need the official version of Windows 10 from Microsoft, then use the following method:
- Open the official website.
- Click on the button "Download tool now."
- The download of the MediaCreationTool.exe file will begin, which must be started after the download.
- Next, follow the instructions for choosing the OS edition and the drive for recording. The advantage of this method is that you can do two things at once - download the image with the operating system and write it to the drive in automatic mode (nothing is required of you).
Now you know how to make a Windows ISO image bootable immediately, without additional files and programs using one single utility from Microsoft. Exactly the same application was created for the convenience of downloading and recording the image of Windows 8.
If you need Windows 7 or older, then you need to make an ISO image as a bootable drive through third-party software. Letโs figure out how to do it.
We write the image to the drive
If everything is clear with the new versions of Windows, then what about previous releases or other files from which you need to create a boot disk or flash drive? The functionality of UltraISO utility comes to the rescue again. With its help, we can quickly record the necessary data:
- Prepare a flash drive / disk, ISO image (the instructions for creating are in the article above) and run the program itself.
- Now click on the "Boot" button and select "Burn Hard Disk Image" from the menu.
- In the window that opens, you must specify Disk Drive, select the location of the recorded image on the hard drive and click the "Burn" button.
- Wait until the procedure is complete and remove the device from the PC.
As you can see, making an ISO image bootable and burning it to a USB flash drive or disk is quite simple. In addition to the described UltraISO program, you can use the functionality of Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120 and similar applications.
In the case of Windows 8 or 10, it is recommended to immediately go to the official website and download a special utility to create a boot disk. So you will save a lot of time searching for the necessary assembly of the operating system and analyzing the functionality of the program for recording.
