For more than eighty years, the Romen Theater has been welcoming its spectators and giving them celebration, joy and love.
Nikolai Alekseevich Slichenko, artistic director of the theater, thanks to his unique talent as an actor, teacher, leader, managed to create a troupe, which the audience of all countries of the world applauds standing.
From the history of the theater
The musical culture of Gypsies has become close to Russian people since the time people appeared on the territory of Russia. Gypsy songs, dances could not leave indifferent neither ordinary people, nor representatives of the intelligentsia.
Perhaps for this reason, in 1930, the idea of forming a gypsy theater was pleasant to everyone, including the country's leadership. During the first year of its existence, the creative team was considered a studio. Only after the successful premiere of the musical-drama performance in three acts “Life on Wheels” it was decided to rename the studio into the Gypsy Theater “Romen”.
In difficult war years, the theater troupe, like all the actors of the country, gave performances at the front and supported the spirit of the rear workers. Most of the proceeds from the concerts went to the aid of the army.
The Romen Theater has not changed the address of its stay since 1969. It was then that on Leningradsky Prospect 32/2 in the concert hall of the Sovetskaya Hotel and in the building located next door, it was decided to place the famous theater.
In 2005, the theater was reconstructed and the facade of the building was restored. The hall was equipped with modern sound equipment, lighting equipment.
Theater mission
Over the years, the troupe of the theater has shown a surprisingly reverent attitude to the traditions of its people. The basis for this was laid by the composer Bugachevsky, who for thirty-seven years directed everything related to the musical part in the work of the theater.
He collected and recorded folk tunes of gypsies living in different parts of Russia. “Gypsy folk songs and dances” was the name of the collection released by the composer. And today this edition is the most complete of the existing collections of gypsy music.
Preserving the original musical culture of the gypsies is one of the main tasks that the collective is called upon to solve.
From the first days of its existence, the Romen Theater in the person of its leaders and the entire troupe took on other important missions. One of them was the enlightenment of their people. The introduction of people of other nationalities to the gypsy culture is another major task that the theater team faces.
Troupe
The creative team of the Romen Theater is unique if we take into account the number of acting dynasties working here. The founders of the former were the oldest actors of the theater, such as Lyalya Chernaya, N. Pankova, M. Cherkasova, V. Polyakov and many others.
Later, the troupe of the theater was supplemented by a galaxy of talented young actors, who later also became the founders of theatrical gypsy dynasties. These include O. Yankovskaya, L. Mushtakova, O. Petrova, N. Slichenko and many more other actors.
Today, many young families work in the theater, who completely devote themselves to art, investing in what they do, particles of their soul.
Repertoire
The Romen Theater can truly be proud of its repertoire. Many plays written by the first dramatists of the theater I. Rom-Lebedev, I. Khrustalev, and today live on the stage of the theater. They became a kind of gypsy classic.
Until 1937, performances were played in gypsy. But it was decided that the language spoken by the actors from the stage should become Russian. This significantly increased the number of spectators of the theater, allowed to expand the repertoire, including classics of Russian and foreign literature.
Thanks to the efforts of talented directors and theater actors, musicals, musical comedies and fairy tales, dramas, musical and romantic fantasies, and parables have been put on stage.
The Romen Theater, whose repertoire is so diverse and close to people of different cultures, has been greeted with storms of applause in any corner of the Earth for more than eighty years.
Playbill
This year the theater season in Moscow begins the Romen Theater. The playbill of the theater invites spectators to visit the grandiose show “We are Gypsies”, in which the whole troupe is involved, including the artistic director of the theater Nikolai Slichenko. For many years this performance is a kind of visiting card of the team.
The list of upcoming performances includes the premieres of the parable “Oath”, musical comedies “Horseshoe of Happiness”, “King of Diamonds”, musical and romantic fantasy “Bells of Love”.
Performances without which the viewer simply does not think of the Romen Theater will also be played in the season. These are, first of all, such productions as “Gypsy Paradise”, “Grushenka”, “Countess-Gypsy” and many others.
The performances sound a lot of music, dancing, gypsy songs, rarely performed from the stage.
In each new theatrical season, the audience expects the actors of the Romen Theater to master the game, an unforgettable experience. It has never happened so that the expectations of the public are not met.
