Each user of the Windows operating system at least once, but searched the file system. But few people know which service is responsible for this and how it works. In this article, weβll talk about the same thing, so at the end of reading you will learn a little more about your system.
SearchProtocolHost.exe - what is this process?
Initially, let us indicate that not one process in the system is responsible for the search, but two are SearchProtocolHost and SearchFilterHost. You can see them in the "Task Manager" by opening the tab "Processes". As for the second, everything is simple with it - it filters all the files found by your request, leaving only the more accurate ones. But with SearchProtocolHost.exe, everything is a little more complicated.
This process starts immediately after the system starts. He works in the background, constantly collecting information about each file in the system and entering it into his database, in other words, indexes the files. Thus, by searching the system, the service accesses the database, thereby reducing the time spent on the search.
The process loads the system
If you were in the Task Manager, you might notice that the SearchProtocolHost.exe process is unstable. At some point, it can consume such a meager amount of computer resources that its operation is almost imperceptible, and sometimes, on the contrary, it loads the computer heavily, because of which freezes appear. This is especially noticeable on weak computers.
Correct the situation
The question is what to do in such situations? Here you should decide whether you are ready to sacrifice the ability to quickly search for files on the system in exchange for an increase in computer performance. If so, then just turn off the corresponding service. This is done as follows:
- In the "Task Manager", go to the "Services" tab.
- In the lower part of the window, click on the button of the same name.
- In the new Services window, search for Windows Search.
- Double click on this service.
- In the properties, change the startup type to "Disabled".
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
Now, after the computer is restarted, the process will not start; accordingly, the computer's power consumption will decrease and productivity will increase.
