The seventeenth century was marked by the fact that the cupboards acquired the appearance that came to us. Even then, the sideboard for the kitchen kept expensive dishes for a meal, it could be silver or porcelain utensils. It is noteworthy that before the buffet became so functional, it was a shelf on which dishes were also stored. Only with time did they begin to add lockers and countertops, which were intended for something.
Translated from the Latin language, the word "buffet" means "dandy table", "brilliant", which, in fact, reflects the essence of its purpose. It was this kitchen furniture that reflected the well-being of the family, or at least served as the place to exhibit all the most expensive and valuable.
For example, the French, who were the ancestors of the modern appearance of the buffet, kept their home-made grape wine in the cabinet , the Germans put beer mugs and decorative vases in the buffet, but the Slavs considered it their duty to put a samovar, a kettle or a bowl for jam there. As a result, the objects exhibited were not only an indicator of wealth, but also decorative elements that adorned and ennobled the appearance of the room.
Buffets for the kitchen and their appearance
The classic sideboard for the kitchen is a massive cupboard with opaque doors, and above it there is a cabinet that also has doors, however they can be glass or stained glass (depending on the style of the room or the sideboard itself). They are connected by a wooden wall, which is attached to the rear of both cabinets, and the top of the floor stand can serve as a tabletop on which dishes or vases with flowers or fruits are placed.
The material for such furniture is wood, usually of expensive varieties, decorated with carvings and various patterns, which can even be burned out on wooden doors and on the edge of the cabinet. However, for modern interiors, such products can be made from less expensive and massive materials, for example, from chipboard or fiberboard. It is worth noting that, if necessary, the buffet can be artificially aged with paint or performed using the crackle technique. Here, of course, it all depends on the wishes of the customer or the style of the room in which the buffet will stand.
Buffet and interior
For each interior, you can choose your own buffet. So, country or eco-style involves a buffet for the kitchen made of natural wood, which will not be varnished. It can consist of various sizes of cabinets and shelves.
For a kitchen in a modern style, a buffet that will be made of plastic or acrylic is suitable. As decoration, tinted glass can be used in it. You can also use not the entire buffet set, but its lower part, which is called the serving buffet.
Of course, to put such beauty in the kitchen or dining room, you have to pay a tidy sum, but there is an opportunity to save. Buffets can be purchased at flea markets or online auctions of old things. They are not cheap there, but still less than in stores, and the quality of the materials will be better, especially if you decide to purchase a wooden exhibit.
You can search for such a piece of furniture from your grandmother or her friends. The resulting buffet can be put in order, cleaned, painted or artificially aged. And here in your kitchen or in the dining room will appear a masterpiece of almost manual work, which is much more valuable than the purchased item. After all, your own made buffet for the kitchen will bring a piece of soul and creativity to your interior.
